The Art Director also creates covers for all co-editions; designs 1 to 2 titles each season; manages and directs outside designers, illustrators, and vendors; oversees all aspects of in-house design; and tracks spending for related budgets. The Art Director works closely with a strong editorial team dedicated to the highest quality craft books. A successful candidate will have at least 2 to 3 years of art direction experience in book or magazine publishing and a strong working knowledge of current versions of Adobe Creative Suite. Candidates must be team players with a demonstrated ability for collaborative leadership as well as top-notch organizational skills.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume and design samples (no larger than 10MB).

Spheres of Responsibility

Acquisitions: Attend editorial acquisitions meetings to provide design feedback on prospective book projects. If project is approved, provide feedback on budget to Editorial Director and Acquisitions Editor.

Photo Shoots: Concept, arrange, and execute photo shoots (approximately 30 per year). This includes: determining budgets, brainstorming concepts and obtaining author approval, scouting locations, booking talent (photographers, stylists, models), delivering projects to stylists, establishing styling and set design, providing ?on-site leadership and direction, and executing shoots within schedule and budget. Make photo selections in a timely manner following the shoot, to ensure proper scheduling for cover design and delivery of photos to designer.

Staff Management: Supervise freelance and in-house designers and illustrators, assigning designers and illustrators to projects, and then providing art direction and schedule supervision for all projects, for approximately 40 books per year. Liaise with authors, editors, and any other necessary parties to ensure quality throughout the entire book process.

Design: Conceptualize and execute cover designs (including font research, cover comps, and multiple design reviews), interior layouts, and (on occasion) marketing collateral, delivering creative, customer-friendly materials on schedule. Successfully present projects to internal team members for approval with clear communication, rationale, and ownership. Book layout includes design review, first pages (and corrections), second pages (and corrections), and cover mechanicals, filling any other roles as necessary to ensure timely publication. Ensure that each book has a unique presence within the market but still maintains continuity with the Interweave aesthetic.

Support and participate in new initiatives within the team. Contribute ideas and participate in team brainstorms, support the team in increasing efficiency in team processes and workflow, and work on special projects as assigned.
