Interweave is seeking a highly-motivated Art Director to lead a talented design team within its renowned book department. This position oversees the design and production of approximately 40 illustrated books per year, leading unique photo shoots for approximately 30 titles. The Art Director also creates covers for all co-editions; designs 1 to 2 titles each season; manages and directs outside designers, illustrators, and vendors; oversees all aspects of in-house design; and tracks spending for related budgets. The Art Director works closely with a strong editorial team dedicated to the highest quality craft books. A successful candidate will have at least 2 to 3 years of art direction experience in book or magazine publishing and a strong working knowledge of current versions of Adobe Creative Suite. Candidates must be team players with a demonstrated ability for collaborative leadership as well as top-notch organizational skills.

Spheres of Responsibility

Acquisitions: Attend editorial acquisitions meetings to provide design feedback on prospective book projects. If project is approved, provide feedback on budget to Editorial Director and Acquisitions Editor.

Photo Shoots: Concept, arrange, and execute photo shoots (approximately 30 per year). This includes: determining budgets, brainstorming concepts and obtaining author approval, scouting locations, booking talent (photographers, stylists, models), delivering projects to stylists, establishing styling and set design, providing ?on-site leadership and direction, and executing shoots within schedule and budget. Make photo selections in a timely manner following the shoot, to ensure proper scheduling for cover design and delivery of photos to designer.

Staff Management: Supervise freelance and in-house designers and illustrators, assigning designers and illustrators to projects, and then providing art direction and schedule supervision for all projects, for approximately 40 books per year. Liaise with authors, editors, and any other necessary parties to ensure quality throughout the entire book process.

Design: Conceptualize and execute cover designs (including font research, cover comps, and multiple design reviews), interior layouts, and (on occasion) marketing collateral, delivering creative, customer-friendly materials on schedule. Successfully present projects to internal team members for approval with clear communication, rationale, and ownership. Book layout includes design review, first pages (and corrections), second pages (and corrections), and cover mechanicals, filling any other roles as necessary to ensure timely publication. Ensure that each book has a unique presence within the market but still maintains continuity with the Interweave aesthetic.

Support and participate in new initiatives within the team. Contribute ideas and participate in team brainstorms, support the team in increasing efficiency in team processes and workflow, and work on special projects as assigned.

Essential Functions of the Job

3.Manage freelance and in-house designers and illustrators, art directing to keep all designs within the Interweave aesthetic, yet with a unique presence within the market.
4.Conceptualize covers and interior book designs. Fill in any roles as needed to meet deadlines and budgets.

Knowledge or Skill Required

The candidate for this position must have the following education, experience and skills:

A college degree with at least 6 years of experience in the field of graphic design, focusing on book layout design. At least 2 years as an Art Director.

1-2 years management experience with both in-house staff and freelancers.

A strong hands-on knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator CS6.

Meticulous attention to detail.

Ability to prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines without sacrificing quality.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to remain level-headed and think clearly in stressful circumstances.

Proven leader with a talent for bringing the best out your team.

Record of successfully managing multiple long-term projects.

Demonstrated talent for working independently.

Knowledge (or interest) of arts and crafts would be helpful but not required.
