The Public Affairs Director will work with the Communications Division to provide strategic leadership in media relations, public affairs, and general communications to advance comprehensive, ongoing, organization-wide communications initiatives, including media outreach, publications, and digital efforts. The Public Affairs Director works with a small team and will report to the Communications Division Director.


Develop and execute national and project-specific communications plans to support policymakers and officials from all three branches of state government;
Develop project-specific communications tools (media advisories, press releases, talking points, fact sheets, etc.);
Serve as a spokesperson and contact for project-specific media requests;
Develop relationships with reporters and proactively generate media coverage of the CSG Justice Center's work;
Collaborate with the division director and senior staff to develop long-range strategies to guide the Justice Center's overall communications initiatives;
Plan and participate in policy-focused meetings of high-ranking government officials, advocates, and national experts;
Ensure that senior staff and CSG Justice Center colleagues, consultants, or funders are aware of relevant project developments and that other work in the field is leveraged for the advancement of CSG Justice Center goals;


Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and an analytical mind;
Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a clear, concise way;
Demonstrated experience with managing media inquiries, and developing and executing a strategic communications plan;
Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work independently and in a team setting, and a sense of humor;
Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines;
Willingness to travel on occasion.

At least eight years of work experience in the fields of communications, public relations, or public affairs, ideally with some exposure to criminal justice issues and/or policy analysis.

A college degree (required).
