Primary Responsibilities

•Serves as our media relations specialist.
•Provides professional media relations expertise and management skills to leadership and programs toward the goal of raising awareness of our mission, programs and initiatives with target audiences.
•Proactively develops media relations strategies and concepts, and supervises and/or produces written materials for programs, specifically, news releases, blogs, features articles, opinion pieces and speeches.
•Establishes and maintains contacts with news media representatives and overseas development and management of media mailing lists.
•Provides op-ed and "letters to the editor" to general press, specialized journals and magazines; and, writes material for our blog.
•Plan, develop and coordinate special media events.
•Serves as project leader in monitoring and evaluating success of media activities, e.g., clipping service and/or in-house capabilities; subscriptions.
•Develops and analyzes appropriate measurement techniques to determine success of Media Relations efforts.
•Initiates and manages strategic projects and programs within our media relations activities.
•Other duties as assigned by communications director


•Minimum three years Media relations experience as a writer/publicist. Agency experience preferred.
•Prior media relations experience serving both as an individual contributor and in leading other individuals or groups in developing, implementing and managing strategies, tactics and projects within their field of expertise.
•Undergraduate degree in communications or related field.
•Detail oriented with ability to work independently.
•Computer literate.
•Excellent proven written and oral communications skills.
•Previous supervisory and management experience required.
•Experience in budgeting and forecasting.
•Significant project management skills and experience.
•Broad range of communications, marketing, design and technical web skills.
•Knowledge of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and its issues nationally and regionally.
•Demonstrated experience working in a multicultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and physical ability is an important institutional value.

Must be able to:

•Write compelling copy for news releases, blogs or action alerts.
•Pitch a story to the media.
•Follow and enforce a brand and style guide.
•Take initiative to ensure the Task Force is on go-to organization for LGBT and progressive issues.

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience. Provides excellent benefits — health, dental and vision insurance; annual and sick leave; 403(b) plan with employer contributions.

This position is part of our collective bargaining unit.
