About the National Aquarium
As a nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire conservation of the world's aquatic treasures, the National Aquarium champions environmental initiatives by engaging with visitors, volunteers, students, and citizens from around the world to actively participate in the preservation of our natural resources and living systems.

For three decades, the National Aquarium has been a symbol of urban renewal, an economic anchor for the region, and a source of pride for Marylanders. The vision for creating this world-class facility began with the citizens of Baltimoreour most loyal supporters. When National Aquarium opened in Baltimore in 1981, it became the jewel of the city's Inner Harbor redevelopment, “Baltimore's miracle.”

Considered one of the nation's top aquariums, this nonprofit organization has served more than 47 million guests since opening. Today, the National Aquarium is an economic engine for the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland, with an annual economic impact greater than $330 million and creating more than 3,300 jobs and attracting nearly 1.4 million visitors annually.

The National Aquarium holds living collections of more than 17,000 animals representing hundreds of species of fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals in award-winning, naturalistic habitats. Education programs reach thousands of students each year with activities in schools and in the field. Our Conservation team restores habitats and preserves species in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and around the world. Moreover, as the nation's aquarium, we are dedicated to promoting science-based conservation action to address critical issues that impact marine and coastal ecosystems. With over 1,000 volunteers and 100,000 members, the National Aquarium is focused on changing the way the world views oceans and aquatic systems by instilling a sense of urgency around protecting the planet's life support system.

Our mission to inspire conservation of the world's aquatic treasures comes to life every day within our Aquarium walls and beyond: in Maryland schools, in local neighborhoods, in the watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay, and all across this blue planet.
