B’nai B’rith InternationalJob DescriptionPosition:Deputy Editor, B’nai B’rith MagazineDepartment: CommunicationsSupervisor: Communications Vice President and EditorPosition Location:Washington, D.C.Date: February 2014Position SummaryUnder the direct supervision of the vice president of communications and the magazine editor, the deputy editor will provide support to the editor on our magazine as well as support to our Communications Department. Must provide resume and three clips.Essential Duties and Responsibilities•Handle day-to-day tasks of responding to editorial “pitches,” requests for additional information, questions from contract authors, primary day-to-day contact with contracted authors, etc. Work closely with editor and communications vice president in determining editorial content of magazine and selecting stories to be assigned.•Research and write major feature stories as assigned and contribute to various other magazine departments/sections per quarterly issue.•Write and distribute author contracts and assignment letters, in consultation with the editor. •Work with other organization departments as needed.•Work closely with the magazine designer on design and layout of the magazine. Help designer obtain photographs with appropriate permissions as needed.•Develop and coordinate “web exclusive” material for the magazine.•Report, write and/or edit the B’nai B’rith Today news section of the magazine. •Help develop headlines, captions and verify photo credits.•Provide “first read” on all magazine copy, with strict adherence to tone, AP style, B’nai B’rith style, grammar; verify facts. •Work closely with editor to review articles and provide follow-up edits. Work with contract authors to improve article; determine if additional information is needed.•Write/edit other Communications Department materials upon request.•Help copy edit, proofread magazine and other organization materials.•Assist in editing, compiling and posting material to the B’nai B’rith website and social networking sites.•Light accounts payable duties for communications department•Other duties as assigned. Qualifications•BA in English, Journalism, Communications or related field.•One to two years professional experience in a writing/editing environment with a magazine focus.•Ability to multi-task and work under multiple strict deadlines.•Working knowledge of electronic media, Web publishing and social networking.•Thorough knowledge of AP style and grammar.•Ability to work both independently and within a team. •Understanding of Jewish issues firstname.lastname@example.org.No phone calls.
