The McClatchy Company is looking for a tablet designer to shepherd in a new era of mobile stargazing and production. Do you have an art degree and a penchant for visual storytelling and journalism? Are you a numbers geek who owns seven mobile devices and has been known to juggle them all at once during a big news or cultural event? Or perhaps you’re a stargazing news junkie who wields code and words with equal vim and ruthlessness? All of the above? Read on.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (in order of importance):

McClatchy needs a sharp, skillful, aesthetically inclined talent who thinks in many directions and can suggest new ways of telling a story geared toward mobile readers. The successful candidate will:

> Design great experiences for tablet and phone journalism.

> Know the ins and outs of the mobile storytelling landscape – what hits, what misses, and who’s doing what in the industry.

> Create beautiful tablet and web-based visuals, including interactive graphics, static InDesign pages, and all that lie betwixt and between.

> Be passionate about great journalism, storytelling, design, typography, photography, and illustration.

> Suggest innovative features for our tablet publications, whether one-off, standing regular features, or tied to a particular story.

> Help suggest, edit, and curate stories for tablet production.

> Monitor analytics on mobile stories and draw conclusions based on findings about which stories work best for mobile consumers.

> Help create and ideate the launch of a new tablet publication for McClatchy, from the stage of prototypes, logo design and mockups to template construction and publication of the first edition.

The tablet designer will work in the Washington, D.C. office, reporting to the Senior Digital Editor and collaborating closely with the Table Editor, Director of Mobile Initiatives, McClatchy Interactive, and individual McClatchy newsrooms.

Education: College degree required.

Special Training: The successful candidate will be a heavy “tablet” user and reader with a strong understanding of the expectations of the new audience on these devices.

Experience: Journalist with a high level of editing experience at a newspaper, magazine, or national website -- handling national, international, investigative, in-depth coverage – and hands-on digital editing experience. Five years of experience preferred with two years in tablet design, graphic design, news design, video design, or interactive design.

Skills Needed: Excellent news judgment. Ability to get ridiculously excited about design trends. Typographical prowess. An aversion to “trying” to go viral and instead a commitment to telling each story in the way it needs to be told. Beautifully realized designs of scope and depth. A grounding in artistic storytelling and an innovative vision for how journalism should get done in 2014 and beyond. An understanding of and appreciation for: quirk, snark, squick, and Weird Twitter. Also, please have a deft hand with InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator, HTML5, CSS 3, Javascript, jQuery and/or database journalism.

Personal Attributes: Creative and collaborative mindset. Energy, passion, curiosity, and aesthetic know-how. Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills required. Ability to work well with a variety of staff and editors in the entire Company. And an appreciation that you just finished reading a job posting that used the word “betwixt.”

Please send cover letter, resume, and salary requirements to: Competitive salary and benefits. EOE. No phone calls please.
