The Director of Messaging and Editorial Content drives messaging/content strategy and editorial execution across all elements of The New School’s marketing program. This position sits within the marketing and creative services department headed by the Chief Marketing Officer.
We need a brilliant editorial content and messaging leader who can define a vision, create ideas, drive coherent, compelling execution and influence key prospects to become interested in and engage with The New School and its schools and programs.
A proven editorial content leader who guides the messaging and editorial team for the University, the Director must have a track record of leading complex, multi-faceted messaging and content programs for multiple brands, as well as demonstrated ability to take a hand-on approach to accomplishing the day-to-day work of the department. The candidate for this position has worked across multiple platforms in print, digital and video and is facile with creating and expressing concepts/ideas in many formats from long-form editorial copy, to advertising, infographics, mixed media galleries etc., and understands how to partner with visual artists, art directors and graphic designers to use words and images together in an integrated way to create the desired communications effect. This person is well versed in creating marketing ideas, advertising campaigns and editorial content for brands as well as publications and the web.
The Director must mentor, inspire and manage a team of copywriters and editors in order to help them achieve their best and grow professionally. Experience in overseeing day-to-day workflow of a print and digital editorial process is required, including the development and management of ideas and content in all formats from assigning, to concepting, evaluating, copy writing, editing, fact-checking, to measurement of effect. This person must prioritize the university’s strategic marketing objectives as the catalyst and benchmark for efforts, and understand and relate to the needs and mindsets of our key audiences as the primary focus.
Collaborating with the Director of Brand and Marketing Strategy, the Director will create a comprehensive messaging strategy for all key audiences. Partnering with Art and Design, the Director will create a holistic vision for the content programs for university brands and programs that reflects The New School’s distinctive positioning and achieves the university’s growth and programmatic objectives. With these partners, the Director is responsible for conceptual development as well as executional delivery of messaging, advertising and content that translates marketing goals into a reflection of the University brand and positioning and inspires our audiences to deeply engage and participate with The New School.
Primary Responsibilities:
-Provide editorial and creative vision and direction. Partner with the Creative Services teams to create integrated ideas and concepts that deliver on this vision and are executed in multiple forms and formats.
-With Director of Brand and Marketing Strategy define and execute a messaging strategy for the university and all key brands and programs.
-Leadership and management of the Messaging and Editorial Content team personnel, workflow and output/deliverables, including content for marketing materials, collateral, advertising, web, publishing.
-Create competency and accountability within the team to use creative ideas and editorial content to drive intended audience behavior, and desired growth and programmatic results within the university. Advance the output and business results by identifying and/or inspiring others to generate new and innovative approaches and solutions.
-Advance the speed, turn-around time and efficiency of the team and the department by streamlining and instilling new processes for work.
-Manage editorial/content budget and calendar.
-Partner with all other teams within the marketing and creative services departments, and liaise with university deans and departments and admissions leaders to understand programs and deliver to goals.

Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelors degree in English, Communications, Journalism or a related field
-8+ years experience in advertising, journalism, marketing or brand content creation, preferably on a creative/editorial team in an agency-style or online/publishing environment
-Experience in higher education, and/or non-profit branding a plus
-Superior strategic thinking, superb writing and editing ability, strong verbal communications skills and project management
-Ability to perform under tight deadlines and in a fast-paced environment; flexible, with an ability to deal with change and multiple assignments at once
-Ability to get others excited about ideas; a strong portfolio of ideas and work that demonstrates problem solving, innovative thinking, originality and creativity, audience understanding and brand sensitivity
-Demonstrated leadership, high level of initiative, evidence of using creative skills in support of business and marketing objectives
-Thrives in a collaborative environment, is a resolution-builder, and a progress maker
