We are seeking a full-time or part-time Graphic Designer to take over design work currently handled by our principal. Exceptionally strong candidates will be considered for the position of Creative Director (additional duties listed below). Either position offers opportunities to work remotely using IM, phone, screen-sharing, and email to communicate with your team. (You must be able to come in to our Oakland office as needed, typically 2 - 3 days per week.)

This role is ideal for someone who is skilled at getting to the heart of the matter, and passionate about helping people succeed through design.

We are a small team with a start-up mentality. Come dream big with us!

Required Skills
  • As a designer, you are able to make people shine by revealing and celebrating their essential qualities.
  • Mastery of typography.
  • Experience with interaction design and print design.
  • Ability to bring things to life in writing and speaking.
  • You are a natural teacher. Many of our clients are new to design principles or don't have a keen eye. We make it our job to instill an appreciation for design and give people the language to talk about it.

Things You'll Design
  • Visual identities for individuals, nonprofits, and businesses.
  • Websites, email signatures, animated GIFs, email newsletters.
  • Catalogs, brochures, business cards, letterhead.
  • Internal projects: website overhaul, business cards, templates for proposals and invoices, annual give-away item.
  • A new product we're developing that will require information graphics and interaction design.

Other Things You'll Do
  • Discuss the shaping of our team, business, and culture.
  • Collaborate on proposals and time estimates.
  • Write design briefs.
  • Work collaboratively with clients on mood boards.
  • Create usage guidelines for visual identities.
  • Participate in the creation of an inspiring, strategically-sound vision of Round Hex in 3 years.

Additional duties if hired as Creative Director:
  • Get people to open up, like in a good Terry Gross interview.
  • Determine the creative direction of projects.
  • Lead design presentations and client meetings.
  • Advise clients on strategy.
  • Hire outside talent for individual project needs (illustrators, photographers, designers, writers, etc).
  • Broaden our communications offerings (may include video, writing, and more).
  • Give feedback to team members in a way that is kind and inspires people's best work.

Additional Requirements
  • Occasional trips to visit clients in New York and elsewhere.
  • If you plan to work remotely you will need a quiet space with reliable, high-speed internet.

Who You Are
  • You enjoy celebrating people's strengths.
  • You're curious, observant, and tuned in to people.
  • You enjoy cultivating life-long relationships.
  • You'd be a committed participant in the process of building a great company.
  • You relish a tough design problem and don't give up easily.
  • You enjoy working as part of a team.
  • You are invested in your work, but criticism of your work does not feel personal.
  • You are candid, and you speak up when something bothers you.

We Offer
  • Opportunities to work remotely 2 or 3 days per week.
  • Membership at Ace Monster Toys, a hacker space with laser cutters, 3D printers, a CNC machine, and large-format printers.
  • If you have freelance clients we will be happy to discuss a profit sharing arrangement if you would like to bring them under the Round Hex umbrella.

Round Hex Culture and Values
  • We have fun on the job and do what we can support each other when the job is difficult.
  • We encourage and support professional growth.
  • We value leadership at all levels.
  • We avoid overtime work because we want everybody to have time and energy left over for the rest of life. (Accordingly we have no "exempt" employees, meaning that even managers qualify for overtime pay in the event that overtime is necessary.)
  • All full-time employees get the same amount of vacation, no matter how junior or senior.
  • Our mission is active: we have a running debate about what it means to believe in somebody and we are proactive in strengthening that conviction in our clients. We take on new clients on a consensus basis and we renew that consensus annually.
  • Our founder's mission is to build a company where everybody loves their job.
