College of Journalism and Communications
Deputy News Director/Editor-Mornings or Afternoons

The University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications is seeking candidates for two deputy news editors/directors for the Innovation News Center (INC), which feeds local news, weather and sports content to the seven terrestrial broadcast and digital properties that serve 19 counties in North Central Florida. These are pivotal roles in the INC, helping to keep track of all the moving parts that go into our updates and news products on the NPR, PBS and ESPN affiliates on radio, TV and Web, as well as the award-winning website and the 24/7 news/weather/sports television station.

The DNE positions are hands-on positions helping to manage a cross-platform professional newsroom generating content for a non-student audience, yet produced mostly by undergraduate students. Thus, this is a job that requires several different skills: strong news judgment and management experience, an affinity for teaching and mentorship, and deep knowledge of established and emerging platforms.

At the same time, this person must be focused on the future. The dual mission of the INC is to not only provide a valuable public service to our community and a teaching hospital for our news students, but also to help shape and test the future of journalism. We are seeking someone who knows the forces acting on our industries and can help lead us forward by taking an active role in development of new ways of telling stories and embracing new platforms for news.

Required Qualifications: Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and at least two years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications: At least five years of experience as a news director at a public or commercial radio or television news station or a print or digital news organization. Demonstrated experience in working in a blended/multiplatform news environment.

Spanish language proficiency is most welcome, but not required.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to serves as the main supervisor for news operations from 4 a.m. to noon M-F (morning DNE) or 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tu-Fri and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat. (afternoon DNE). This position reports directly to the director of the Innovation News Center. She/he upholds professional standards while serving as a mentor/teacher to students in an educational setting and lab environment as they report, produce and deliver news, weather and sports content in English and Spanish. This is a position that oversees news across digital, broadcast and cable platforms and uses established and emerging tools to engage and build audiences. He/she will use social media and other engagement methods to both generate stories and sources as well as to report news. These positions consult/coordinate coverage with the other deputy news director/editor as well as the other news directors/product leaders.

Application Procedure: Both positions will close at 11:59pm, February 20, 2014. To apply, click on the link to submit your application. and
