USIP seeks a Graphic Designer to work with staff across the Institute to establish and maintain consistent design standards. The Designer will also create web- and print-ready publication designs, including for books, reports, advertisements, brochures, marketing products, and miscellaneous materials. The position will design high-quality products that communicate ideas effectively with branding consistency and within budget. This position reports to the Director of Publications in close coordination with the Vice President of External Relations, and works with staff to meet design needs across the Institute.


Establish design standards across the Institute to ensure consistent branding.
Coordinate across departments to determine the requirements and audience for new products.
Design products across a range of print formats and create specifications and style sheets.
Revise designs in response to feedback.
Provide page layouts of approved designs, and in coordination with production staff, implement corrections as needed.
Evaluate the suitability of table, figure, and map files for printing and develop art guide to assist authors in preparing high-quality graphics.
Maintain project files and spec sheets, and update the project database.
Design web-based products and elements, and work to ensure consistency across web and print products.

Performs other duties as assigned.

A minimum of seven to ten years’ experience in design, including book covers, reports, and marketing material.
Bachelor of Fine Arts or related degree and certifications.
Mastery of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat. Knowledge of Word and Excel.
Skilled in visual thinking and active listening, with an ability to understand complex ideas, solicit input from multiple staff and authors, respond creatively with appropriate design comps, and revise comps in response to feedback.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to adapt to changing requirements and multiple viewpoints.
Must be able to work collaboratively across the Institute, and also complete top-quality individual design projects.
Experience building a family of products with brand identity, as well as experience designing web-based material and information graphics such as tables, figures, and maps.
Demonstrable knowledge of good type and design principles, design software, and offset and digital printing technology.
