This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented and dynamic communications professional to join the executive leadership team of a rapidly growing and highly influential global organization. The Vice President, Communications (VPC) will build upon, and significantly enhance the profile and impact of the Institute globally. The successful candidate will work closely with WRI’s management and worldwide partners, and with technical and scientific colleagues to integrate communications into their strategies for tangible results and large-scale impact.

This position requires a combination of people management, deep and broad communications experience, entrepreneurial creativity, outstanding writing and visualization skills, international environment and/or development knowledge, active commitment to the values of the organization, and energetic engagement with mission-driven teams.

Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Vice President of Communications (VPC) will be a key member of WRI’s Executive Team - providing strategic, creative, and inspiring leadership for all of WRI’s worldwide communications as well as serve as the anchor manager for all country directors. The VPC will provide a clear vision, strategies and plans to advance WRI’s mission, its programs and organizational strategies.

The VPC will direct a multi-national, multi-disciplinary team. The core Communications group currently consists of approximately 16 communications professionals, including specialists in media relations, web management, social media, public affairs, publications, branding/graphic design and events. They are based at WRI’s global headquarters in Washington, DC with a department budget of approximately $2 million. The VPC will also guide in-country communications professionals and communications staff (part- and full-time) within WRI programs and projects. Travel up to 30% to international locations including developing countries and/or remote locations.


For this pivotal role, WRI seeks a highly experienced professional with excellent strategic acumen and broad experience in multi-media and international communications.

The VPC should ideally embody the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:
•Demonstrated skills in developing integrated, strategic, marketing and communications plans, both proactively and responsively to emerging events with a proven capacity to understand, use, and anticipate changes in new communications technologies and tactics.
•5+ years of journalism or communications experience preferred, within in a large, multi-national corporation or an entity with similar global reach and complexity.
•International experience developing and implementing communications and branding strategies and systems on a global platform with staff and partners in multiple locales.
•Creative and visionary individual with the ability to synthesize communication needs and develop streamlined communication plans.
•Proven ability to formulate, execute and clearly report results utilizing strong analytical measures, critical decision-making and strategic planning skills.
•Capability to effectively interact effectively with WRI board members, senior executives and staff at all levels, as well as leaders worldwide in business, government, civil society, academia and non-governmental organizations.
•Additional language skills preferred (e.g., Mandarin, Hindi, Portuguese)
•Advanced degree in business, marketing, communications or related field and a minimum 10-15 years of experience in progressive management/leadership level positions in marketing or communications (or equivalent combination of education and experience); with preference given to experience with a multi-national, decentralized organization.

•An entrepreneurial approach to problem solving with an ability to create innovative strategies to engage audiences and keep abreast of innovations in communications.
