Director of Communications
BASIC FUNCTIONResponsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that includes media/press and stakeholder outreach, digital social media, event planning, publications development and production, marketing and other tactics and activities, as necessary. Responsible for promoting the Global Economy and Development program (Global), its scholars, centers, initiatives, and research to external stakeholders both in the U.S. and internationally, including policymakers, media, the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) community, multilaterals, the private sector and academic community. Responsible for improving internal communications within Global and with other programs within Brookings.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSBachelor’s degree required (communications, public relations, economics, development, public policy, international relations, journalism, or other related discipline). Master’s degree preferred. Minimum eight years of experience in communications including media relations required. Outreach and event planning experience required. Management of relationships with media professionals that cover international issues preferred. Experience with digital strategy including content management, e-mail and social media required. Experience in policy or educational working environment desirable. Fluent English speaking, writing, and reading skills required. Ability to lead a small team.KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTSEntrepreneurial attitude required. Exemplary organizational ability, combined with extremely robust initiative and strong writing/communications skills. Strong interpersonal skills, discretion, poise, mature judgment; ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong interest and background in international economics/affairs/development preferred. High degree of familiarity with the latest digital communications technology.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES30% Communications Strategy and Management: - Work with the Program Vice President, Deputy Director, and Director of Development and Management to formulate and execute overall communications strategy for Global. - In close consultation with individual scholars, centers and initiatives, help develop and execute communications/outreach strategies by identifying target audiences for a variety of projects, events and publications, and by identifying concrete tactics and activities to effectively disseminate scholarly research to a wide range of audiences for maximum impact. - Work to cultivate and build the Global brand. - Represent Global and advocate its interests within Brookings Departments, particularly within the Central Communications Department and Executive Office. - Propose and implement measures to improve internal communications within Global, including ways to facilitate the flow of information, ideas, and data among scholars and other research staff. - Oversee, lead, and coordinate the communications/outreach activities of the Global communications staff as well as the project coordinators/staff that work on communications. - In coordination with the Director of Development and Management, develop and monitor Brookings’ partnerships with other institutions. - Directly manage the Global communications team (currently, comprising of two communications associates and one digital and online communications specialist).30% Communications and Outreach: - Work with the Central Communications Department to coordinate overall digital communications strategy, which includes conducting communications-related research, managing communications technology, multimedia (including video, motion graphics video, and data visualization) and e-newsletter and events management databases. - Work with digital communications specialists in Global and Central Communications to create content and update website, develop and distribute e-newsletters and utilize other digital and social tools, as needed. - Work with digital communications specialists in Global and Central Communications to develop and advance Global’s digital media communications strategy, including social media outreach and online media contact cultivation. - Work with digital communications specialists in Global and Central Communications to train scholars in social media tools to advance their policy goals, including training them on how to use Twitter. - Identify opportunities for scholars to develop op-eds, policy briefs, letters to the editors, etc.; draft these written materials as necessary. - Draft and edit Brookings web-eds, blogs, press releases, media advisories, event announcements, pitch letters, fact sheets, and other press materials. - Proactively engage target media and coordinate media relations. - Engage external stakeholders, including policymakers, the private sector, and the academic and NGO communities via multiple communications tactics that are identified as part of the overall Global communications strategy. - In close consultation with Global’s Director of Development and Management, craft messages and develop materials to improve communication with current and potential donors. - Manage top audience cultivation and database management strategy.20% Publications Production: - Develop concepts for publications and work with scholars and research staff to produce relevant and timely publications, including reports, policy briefs, fact sheets, books, and other publications. - Along with communications associates, oversee and manage the publications production process including developing a timeline for editing, design, layout, online posting and printing and peer review process.- Work with Global’s Finance Team and Brookings Press to facilitate the submission of Global’s book manuscripts, and collaborate with Brookings Press on publicity activities for Global’s books published by Brookings Press.20% Event Planning: - In close consultation with scholars, develop and organize major public events. This includes identifying speakers and topics; coordinating panels and participants; drafting correspondence and press releases; and working with Communications Department to identify and engage media interest. - Manage the execution of public events (roundtables, workshops, lecture series, etc.), and other meetings with the help of Global communications staff. - Oversee and closely monitor event planning and execution by research and communications staff; directly support staff when necessary.
