Brief position description:
The associate photo editor is responsible for the research and acquisition of all images that appear on S/he must be able to work on tight deadlines as part of an editorial team and must have significant digital know-how, particularly regarding photography. The ideal candidate may have an editorial or agency background, but will possess experience or strong personal interest in the worlds of art, design, and/or architecture, as well as a minimum 2 to 4 years experience commissioning and/or editing photos, and extensive knowledge of Photoshop.
• This person will research and license photography for a wide range of stories, from archival pieces to coverage of exhibitions and events. Must be comfortable contacting image holders and being diligent with image requests where necessary. On some occasions, this person may also need to commission small shoots for upcoming Web features.
• Responsible for managing relationships with image providers, stock photo houses, as well as freelance writers and columnists who submit images for the site.
• Must advise regarding best practices for all elements of Web imagery, including in articles, slideshows, social media, and email marketing – with AD staff members and contributors, alike.
• Must be able to pitch photo-based stories on a regular basis and execute on creating popular, well-trafficked slideshows and image galleries. Knowledge of SEO and social media will be extremely important.
• Must have an understanding of copyright law and industry practices when it comes to the use of images on a commercial, non-ecommerce site.
• Must be highly organized and be able to manage invoicing and any budget-related issues.
