Designer (Print and Digital)
A key member of the Communications Department, the Designer delivers conceptual and unique solutions to communication and design needs, raising the Columbia Mailman School's visibility and reputation through superb, functional design on the website, in print, and in the ways all audiences view and experience the Mailman School brand. Mining the School's history, current curriculum, and leadership messages, the Designer will develop and establish a visual language, providng stability and consistency with photography, typography, color palette, and hierarchy of message. The Designer will ensure visual appeal and consistency in all internal and external communications, including print and digital materials, exhibition design, event signage, industrial and internal events. Working with the Chief Communications Officer and the entire Strategic Communications team, the Designer is a leading proponent of our brand.Responsibilities will include:Directs creative implementation of Mailman School brand from research and aspiration through the design of print and digital communications materials, merchandise and signage. Maintains brand style guide with periodic reviews to ensure that brand specifications support School's broader agenda.Seeks opportunities to collaborate with others contributing to School communications and marketing materials, including selection and supervision of freelance help, coordination and review of visual materials being produced in academic or administrative departments. Determines overall photography strategy. Selects photos and other digital assets. Maintains a school-wide photo database for all print and web/digital projects. Supervises freelance photographers and curates their work according to individual project needs. Cultivates school-wide photo archive. Oversees school-wide signage including electronic bulletin boards, elevator placards, and visual implementation of Mailman brand at internal and external events including graduation, Grand Rounds, and information sessions. Manages print and merchandise production, reviewing bids, selecting vendors, ensuring quality and timely delivery, and making routine site visits to inspect process and adherence to project specifications.Qualifications3+ years experience as digital and print designer. It is critical that candidate maintain a portfolio that includes a range of work.BA/BFA in graphic design, illustration, fine arts, or art production with an emphases on print and web design.Demonstrated excellence with MAC OS plaform. Expert skills in applications including, but not limited to Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and Dreamweaver) and Microsoft Office.Experience working with printers, pre-press vendors, Flash HTML, PHP, Java and CSS programming.Expertise in any of these fields a plus: photo retouching, illustration, information design, web architecture, motion graphics.Excellent organizational and presentation skills and impeccable attention to detail.Interest in/awareness of contemporary public health issues, School mission a plus.
