This position will be responsible for the design, art direction, and related production management of the early childhood magazines including RANGER RICK JR. print magazine and possibly RANGER RICK CUB print magazine. S/he will provide design support related to online and marketing for both magazines.


Design 10 issues of Ranger Rick Jr. magazine per year. (36 pages per issue) and other products in the early childhood magazine area as needed.
•Design and assemble original layouts that will appeal to 3-to-7 year olds.
•Work with Editor and Photo Editor to achieve visual strength, variety, and balance in each issue.
•Work with Editor to develop appropriate typographic elements.
•Revise layouts based on critiques supplied by the Editor.
•Create and produce electronic files for timely delivery to pre-press vendor.
•Work with pre-press vendor to color correction of all files.
•Review all color proofs to ensure quality reproduction.
•Review and sign off on DBL files.
•Package files and send to digital publishers
•Archive all files for possible future use.

Direct freelance illustrators for the creation of art for use in RANGER RICK JR. and other Ranger Rick products as required.
•Work with Editor to choose appropriate artists.
•Make art assignments and negotiate payments.
•Critique sketches and compile comments for the artists for revisions.
•Review portfolios and maintain a file of artists of varying styles.
•Manage related art budgets
•Create and maintain design of Ranger Rick Jr. Web pages and other Ranger Rick Jr. products, as needed. Maintain RANGER RICK JR. and other magazine Style Guides.


•College Degree (BFA in Design preferred)


•3 years design experience in magazine design; experience working on children's products strongly preferred


•Expert knowledge of publishing practices including design, photo editing, and quality control
•Ability to design and produce electronic files using InDesign, Photoshop,
and Illustrator
•Ability to work with editors and freelance artists in developing creative editorial material appropriate for children ages 3-to-7 and children ages 1-to-3
•Ability to design Web content pages
•Ability to juggle multiple projects at once
•Ability to follow projects to completion in a timely manner
•Must be highly organized and detail oriented
