Basic Books is seeking a publicist to join a collaborative team with a proven track record of booking authors on major national media, obtaining review attention in major publications and planning dynamic author events. Our ideal candidate will round out this very successful team and should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to work independently as well as collaboratively, have close attention to detail, and have 2-3 years of experience.

Basic Books, a member of the independently owned Perseus Books Group, publishes 50 original titles a year in various non-fiction categories. With a list comprised of award-winning, bestselling authors who are experts in their fields, Basic Books is often on the leading edge of new ideas with pathbreaking books like Alone Together by Sherry Turkle, Consider the Fork by Bee Wilson, It’s Even Worse Than It Looks by Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein and The Death and Life of the Great American School System, by Diane Ravitch. Other recent New York Times bestsellers include: John Bradshaw’s Dog Sense and Cat Sense, Zbigniew Brzezinski’s Strategic Vision, Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands, and Leonard Susskind’s The Theoretical Minimum.

As part of the tight-knit Basic Books group, publicists have exposure to all parts of the publishing business, are involved in the life of the book from acquisition through publicity, have room for growth, and work in collaboration with editorial, sales and marketing.

Responsibilities include:
•Creating and carrying out publicity campaigns for 10-12 books per season
•Attending seasonal sales meetings, editorial meetings, and select trade shows
•Writing press materials
•Communicating with authors
•Booking local and national print and broadcast media
•Booking events for a limited number of author tours
•Posting to social media
•Meeting regularly with media and events contacts and cultivating new ones

Qualifications
•2-3 years non-fiction book publicity experience
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•Strong organizational skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
•Poise and confidence in communicating with authors, media and in house colleagues
•Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Cision and Publicity Assistant Database
