The Director of Communications is a key member of Manhattan College’s Marketing and Communication department, and will support planning and implementation of strategic communications to enhance the College’s reputation locally, nationally and internationally. The Director of Communications is responsible for developing PR plans, media strategies, and integrated communications campaigns for key campus constituents, with the goal of promoting Manhattan College as a premier institution of higher learning. The position reports to the Executive Director of Marketing & Communication.

The ideal candidate is able to work strategically, as well as tactically to achieve desired results, must be media savvy, and excellent writer and experienced in executing focused media and social media campaigns. He/she will have a track record of media success and measuring results.

An excellent writer and communicator, the Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications. He/she produces communications of all types, including press releases, op-eds, blogs, feature stories, media advisories, newsletters, electronic communications, web site content, and other promotional materials as needed. Additionally, he/she contributes as a writer for College publications and alumni magazine. Experience in the use of various social media platforms and the ability to develop a plan and strategy for incorporating social media into overall PR efforts is required.

Duties include:
-Provide public relations counsel and ongoing support to all academic and programmatic areas campus-wide, including but not limited to communications strategy and planning, messaging, media outreach and social media.
-Prepare stories on an ongoing basis, leveraging profiles, events and angles to support broader College messages.
-Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key national, regional and local news media. Execute all aspects of media relations including story development, media targeting, pitching, and relationship management.
-Secure media opportunities for university spokespeople and conduct interview preparation and media training.
-Stay attuned to external news events and trends related to higher education, research, and innovation/entrepreneurship, leveraging information for media outreach and other visibility opportunities.
-Remain current with new and emerging technologies and tools that can improve the strategic communications efforts of the College and its campaigns.
-Develop, implement and maintain appropriate metrics to evaluate impact and effectiveness of external communications. Inform campus-wide communicators of PR procedures and best practices to encourage communications consistency.
-Contribute creative public relations, communication and marketing ideas and content that advances the image of Manhattan College.
-Utilize Vocus Media Database software (circulate press releases, update media lists/outlets, create custom media lists, analyze press release/news metrics, and monitor daily news/social media alerts)
-Assist Athletics Department as needed with cross-promotion efforts for new hires, athletic/campus events, etc.

Required Qualifications
-Education: Bachelor’s degree in communication, English or journalism and master’s degree in public relations, journalism or related field is highly preferred.
-Experience: Five or more years of related experience.

Skills:
-Exemplary writing, editing, presentation and copy editing skills; proficient in AP style
-Solid media instincts, with proven track record of media and social media success
-Excellent organizational and time management skills
-Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
-Keen judgment and problem solving skills
-Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with Drupal CMS
