Scholastic MATH magazine, an educational publication for grades 6-9, specializes in making connections between real-world math and concepts students are learning in school. To that end, we are looking to hire an Associate Editor with a love of communicating math in exciting ways to young audiences.

The ideal candidate should have editorial and writing experience, preferably for children’s publications, and a background or high interest in math. Teaching experience is a plus.

This job requires an ability to think creatively to generate visually appealing, kid-friendly stories and come up with ways to use actual data to illustrate skills outlined in the recently adopted Common Core State Standards for Math. This is a highly collaborative work environment; the right candidate will be able to fluently express him or herself during discussions with coworkers and in a group setting.

Key Responsibilities
•Write features, news articles, and other copy as needed for MATH magazine’s print and online assets.
•Assign copy and work with the magazine’s team of freelancers.
•Review, edit, and proof copy, layouts, and mathematics content, ensuring information is accurate and adheres strongly to grade-appropriate math standards.
•Oversee the creation of the magazine’s Teacher’s Guide and production of in-house videos and online games.
•Research and pitch story ideas that meet all three of the following criteria: are visually appealing, are of high interest to young audiences, teach a specific math skill tied to the Common Core.

Required Qualifications
•Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, mathematics, mathematics education, or science
•At least 1 to 2 years editorial experience, preferably in children’s or educational publishing
•Middle or High School mathematics teaching experience preferred
•Excellent attention to detail, process, and organization
•Comfortable with and interest in teaching mathematical concepts
•Knowledge of the Common Core State Standards
•Ability to take initiative and work under tight publishing deadlines
•Have a highly creative and collaborative spirit and be able to confidently share ideas and opinions with others
•Willingness to dig deep into math concepts, as well as research and mine data from relevant and reputable sources
