Crain’s Detroit Business, Michigan’s leading source of accurate and reliable local business news, is seeking an experienced Director of Events for our profitable and growing event/conference group. The Director will fill a key role within the organization and will be responsible for overseeing an executing 20+ industry events per year.
Job Responsibilities:

• Drive revenue for conference/event group via sponsor sales, attendee registrations and post event opportunities.
• Initiate ongoing discussions with sales team to develop sponsor programs and target lists.
• Develop strategy to cultivate new relationships and partners to increase revenue and publicity, analyze effectiveness of events.
• Create, manage and monitor Crain’s Detroit Business revenue/expense budget. Develop specific strategies and actions/steps to achieve revenue goals. Oversee budget development where appropriate with event staff.
• Develop and expand vendor relationships and contacts in an ongoing effort to minimize costs and maximize profits.
• Analyze, evaluate and stay on top of marketing, event trends and competitive events to gain insights, avoid over-exposed speakers and topics.
• Supervise Conference and Event Assistants, overseeing all day-to-day aspects (pre-event logistics, contract negotiation, venue selection, marketing, on-site supervision, post project recaps and ROI reports, speaker liaison).
• Work internally with Marketing team to develop integrated conference marketing plan and incorporate strategic integration of marketing activities to achieve conference revenue goals.
• Analyze results to fine tune and maximize in areas of success.
• Build relationships with sponsors to manage relationship and ensure all sponsorship benefits are delivered.
• Identify opportunities to increase revenue with existing sponsors.
• Manage and build upon relationships with event partners with revenue share agreements when appropriate.

Job Requirements:

• An interest in and enthusiasm for the business community that Crain’s Detroit Business covers
• Bachelor’s degree in advertising, marketing, communications, business or other relevant field
• Strong project management and budgeting skills
• 3-5 consecutive years of successful experience planning and producing corporate events, parties, conferences, meetings and events
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal/phone and written skills
• Ability to manage a team, work as a team player and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
• A truly creative mind possessing the ability to come up with innovative ideas
• A proven ability to implement an event from concept to completion, paying close attention to every detail while meeting deadlines and budgets
• Advanced knowledge of MS Office
