Program Assistant, Readings & Workshops (East)
Poets & Writers seeks a program assistant for its Readings & Workshops Program (East), which provides matching fees to writers who participate in literary events sponsored by community-based organizations in New York State, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C. The program assistant is responsible for managing the program’s online grants management system, processing applications, liaising with the accounting department, assisting literary presenters and writers, and providing clerical and administrative support for the program. The ideal candidate will have excellent administrative and computer skills, as well as a commitment to community-based literary programming. The position offers an opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge of the non-profit literary field. The program assistant reports to the program director. This is a full-time position in our New York City office; we offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package that includes fully paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, a 403(b) plan, and generous time off.Responsibilities include: • Manage the program’s online grants management system • Process funding applications in a timely manner and ensure clear, timely communication with applicants • Review and organize materials for weekly grant meetings; assist with evaluation of applications for funding• Work closely with accounting department to ensure timely and accurate fulfillment of approved grants• Track grant spending and generate reports for accounting and development departments• Track submission of reports from grantees• Provide technical assistance to literary presenters and writers via telephone, e-mail, and in-person meetings• Make site visits to Readings & Workshops-sponsored events• Conduct outreach to encourage applications from groups located in underfunded counties or reaching underserved populations• Assist with production of the R&W Blog and program e-newsletter, share blog posts on Facebook and Twitter.• Assist with meetings in the field• Assist with special programs, including the annual Inter-generational and Cross Cultural Readings • Train fellows and interns to use grants management system• Assist with administration of the Maureen Egen Writers Exchange Award• Perform other clerical and administrative tasks as needed Qualifications:• Proficient in database management• Excellent written and verbal communication skills• Knowledge of contemporary literature• Experience working for a nonprofit organization a plus• Experience working with an online grants management system a plus• Experience working with diverse community groups desirable• Friendly manner and collaborative working style• One to two years office experiencePlease send résumé and cover letter to Bonnie Rose Marcus, Program Director, Readings & Workshops (East), at firstname.lastname@example.org.
