Responsibilities: The Public Affairs and Communications Manager (PACM) is responsible for managing the organization's external affairs, public programs, communications activities, and social media efforts targeted to the various audiences that Citizens Union seeks to reach. The PACM will also propose, execute and manage efforts to promote and communicate the organization's new brand, messages and work. Reporting to the executive director, and working collaboratively with the development and public policy staffs, the PACM will coordinate the organization's media and public relations efforts, provide innovative leadership in pursuing and implementing effective social media strategies to increase visibility of and interest in the organization, organize events designed to educate and engage the civic-minded public about important public policy issues, and market its various activities, like its renowned publication, Gotham Gazette.

The core functions of the Communications and Public Affairs Manager will include:

  1. Using the organization's Strategic Plan develop and execute, in consultation with board, committee and staff members, an annual public affairs and communications strategy that is integrated with the policy and development strategies to effectively engage our target audience and to raise the profile of the organization and its publication Gotham Gazette.

  2. Implement and consistently promote a re-branding of the organization.

  3. Launch, promote and maintain a re-designed website.

  4. Increase public engagement both online and through public events and issue forums.

  5. Manage press relations and communications to the media.

  6. Coordinate with the development department on all communications to members and donors.

  7. Serve as primary staff liaison to the organization's program committee
  8. .
  9. Work with graphic design consultants and printers to produce materials.

  10. Market Gotham Gazette with the intent to drive traffic to the site and increase readership.

  11. Strengthen, deepen and coordinate the organization's social media efforts.

  12. Sell advertising on the site for Gotham Gazette.


Qualifications: Candidates should possess the following qualifications and skills:


  1. Bachelor's degree with an interest in public policy, advocacy and the civic life of New York.

  2. Four or more years of professional experience in communication, public relations, media, advertising, and marketing.

  3. Excellent oral and written communication.

  4. Knowledgeable and experienced in developing effective design, branding, imaging.

  5. Proven experience with print production and website management.

  6. Strong personal presence with solid interpersonal skills.

  7. Innovative and critical thinker, diligent, detail-oriented, and exceptional ability to work with others, including staff and board members.

  8. Demonstrated ability to sell advertising that generates income.

  9. Proficiency with Microsoft office and knowledge of design, photo, and web software.

  10. Excel at handling multiple tasks at once.
