The McClatchy Company is seeking a Visual Editor to manage and coordinate photo and video story telling for McClatchy’s national and international journalism. Among the key duties are to hire and oversee freelance videographers and photographers, coach and encourage print and digital journalists and identify digital possibilities for visual story telling.

The ideal candidate has a trained eye and experience producing photo stories, essays and videos. The successful candidate also must be enthusiastic about visual journalism and familiar with photographic and video editing software. The visual editor is crucial to developing a team story-telling approach that relies on solid relationships with journalists in Washington, in McClatchy’s foreign bureaus and at the company’s 29 newspapers. Preferred candidates also would occasionally shoot photo and video as needed. This person would work in McClatchy’s Washington Office reporting to McClatchy’s Washington Bureau chief.


• Work with Bureau editors and reporters to increase use of photos and video as part of our digital strategy.
• Identify visual possibilities at story conceptualization stage.
• Create a variety of photographic and video presentations that can accompany written stories and can stand alone.
• Work with McClatchy editors at our 29 newspapers to create a robust visual team to illustrate bureau stories.
• Help identify dramatic visual journalism done by our 29 newspapers that can be shared across McClatchy.
• Work with the McClatchy News Network and the digital tablet team to integrate bureau photography and videos seamlessly into the wider McClatchy digital products.
• Create a wide network of freelancers in the United States and abroad to deepen the impact of our visual journalists.
• Identify and create partnerships with non-McClatchy visual organizations like the European Pressphoto Agency.
• Teach visual skills to Bureau reporters.
• Be an advocate of visual only journalism as a way to reach a wider audience.
• Identify unique ways to promote or market our visual journalism on such outlets as YouTube and Instagram.
• Manage visual content within bureau spending limits.


• College degree required.
• Two years photo and video experience required and two years journalism experience preferred.
• Familiarity with daily journalism processes and workflow. Strong news judgment.
• Highly creative, with visual sensibility and experience overseeing photo or video projects.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
• Ability to work well with all levels of staff from correspondents and editors to publishers at multiple papers and Washington Bureau.
• Comfortable with juggling multiple tasks with accuracy and efficiency.
