We seek an innovative professional to lead our editorial team. The Editorial Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day tasks of an editorial staff of six, developing a list of approximately 250 titles per year, and assisting the publisher in strategic planning.

- Collaborate with sales reps, custom publishing, licensing, and other internal publishing divisions to coordinate the most effective and strategic publishing plans.
- Hire and provide ongoing development and supervision of editorial staff to ensure best deployment and retention of employees. Invest and nurture staff in order to maximize the talents of each team member.
- Define, develop, and implement strategies, standards, and guidelines for editorial staff.
- Supervise the editorial process and work with editorial staff to maintain deadlines and timely handoffs.
- Recruit freelance authors and book packagers within the framework of the project budget and schedule.
- Review all final manuscripts for consistency and accuracy before delivering to art.
- Review and approve all first and final pages.
- Develop and manage the expense budget for editorial. Ensure appropriate editorial departmental expenses remain within budget.
- Manage and control author fees, book packager costs, and plant costs in accordance with strategic plan and individual project P&Ls.
- Lead weekly editorial meetings and participate in monthly creative director meetings.
- Present new and updated products to the sales departments and vendors as requested.
- Attend industry conferences and visit with publishing partners as needed.
-Daily attendance in Buffalo office required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Familiarity with the school and library market
- Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects with flexibility, and strictly adhere to the multiple deadlines of a complex and overlapping schedule
- Ability to work in a team setting with mutual accountability
- Takes initiative, willing to take appropriate risks

- Decisive, confident, and organized
- Ability to digest and use sales reports
- Ability to negotiate win/win agreements
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Computer skills and facility to work with digital applications and databases
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; public speaking experience a plus
- Bachelor's degree in English, Master's degree preferred
