PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Associate Editor will work with section editors to provide editing, research and writing assistance on a variety of content pieces—from features and special packages to department pages and FOB pages.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Accountable for brainstorming, developing and writing stories for Ebony and, occasionally Ebony.com.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Essential
•Collaborate with editorial teams to write and edit copy for web, online and social media projects as needed.
•Cultivates sources and builds professional relationships with those in the media, PR and entertainment industries as well as in the communities we serve.
•Keeps abreast of current events and trends in specific assigned areas; relays information about said areas to the rest of the Ebony staff.
•Participates in plenary and brainstorming meetings regarding content and special projects.
•Contributes to special projects and event coordination.
•Takes story ideas, tips and concerns and responds quickly and efficiently.
•Juggle multiple, results-oriented initiatives under tight turnarounds.
•Research feature and cover subjects
•Develops the technical skills of writing while maintaining originality.
•Helps to develop work plans for various projects.
•Conceptualize, manage and edit content sidebars for features and write FOB pages like Contributors, Making the Cover, Letters and Archive from the Back of the Book
•Collaborate with the team to develop story ideas, cover lines and editorial calendars.

NONESSENTIAL:
Performs other duties as assigned by the Managing Editor.

SUPERVISION:
No direct reports

INTERACTION:
Extensive interaction with external contacts and internal department staff

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
•Requires a bachelor’s degree in Journalism or in a related area.
•At least 5 years of experience as an editor.
•Experience working with desktop publishing and online documentation software.
•Knows proper content style, grammar, sentence form and structure.
•Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office.
•Strong overall communication skills.
•Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
