PRIMARY FUNCTION
Responsible for creative output and establishment of the overall image, look, and identity of Ebony magazine with oversight of the creative team and creative processes all in fulfillment of our brand promise to the customer and client.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Accountable for the overall creative direction of Ebony magazine, including initial content plans, design concepts, and final designs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential:
Plan, oversee, develop and execute design for Ebony magazine to ensure that both strategic and creative goals are achieved at the highest possible levels.
Create, direct and execute the design from inception to completion; formulate art concepts and layout for Ebony magazine.
Work collaboratively with core business units, participate in company strategizing and make recommendations for changes to the creative function to meet market changes, competitive threats, and support strategic plans.
Analyze the creative team, environment, processes, technologies, etc. to determine areas needing improvement; and build and direct a creative function aligned with and supportive of those goals.
Apply brand identity systems, typography, photography, color and other ingredients appropriately to create innovative visual solutions that meet business and user needs.
Visualize, design and conceptualize the user experience; create visual prototypes or screens.
Extend existing visual systems/brand guidelines across all mediums with moderate design changes or interpretation.
Provide quality assurance of all creative deliverables.
Contribute to the development of JPC’s culture and quality standards.
Delegate day-to-day responsibility to other designers and photographers.
Elevate the creative level of the work by educating other team members, through project development and performance management.
Collaborate with core business units’ team members on strategy, media, account and business development to create and develop new business opportunities.
Meet creative work standards by following production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving operational problems; identify work process improvements.
Develop and monitor budget; implementing cost-savings actions; and prepare and justify job estimates.
Review project production factors by studying budget, background information, objectives, presentation approaches, styles, and techniques.
Select, secure, direct, and produce illustrative material by formulating and assigning layout design concept to artists and photographers; direct the development of design concepts into art layouts.
Prepares layouts for printing by marking-up, pasting-up, and finishing layouts.
Improve quality results by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes and implementing changes where necessary.
Develop and maintain relationships with freelance designers and photographers and external creative vendors to meet deadlines, budget, and quality.
Work with creative team to establish and manage effective processes to streamline all production deliverables.
Manage outside resources, including vendors, photographers, color separators, printers, and freelancers.

Nonessential:
Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision
Directly supervise graphic designers and photography team members.

Interaction
Internal and external contact with vendors, freelance and department staff.

Knowledge and Skills
Bachelor's degree in Art, Graphics or related field and 10 years related experience or in the absence of a bachelor's degree, 15+ years related experience. Business training or experience a plus. Strong design and/or copywriting background necessary. Familiarity of varying design applications such as Flash, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, QuarkXpress, InDesign and PowerPoint. Several years of leadership experience, and a thorough understanding of information architecture, and proven project management skills are required.

Working Conditions
Normal office environment. Extended hours, evening and weekend hours may be required as well as attendance at various meetings. Occasional travel may be required.
