SC Magazine, a Haymarket Media information resource and publication, is in the market for a Special Projects Editor. In addition to being based in our NYC headquarters, this position also could be located in the San Francisco Bay area or in Boston if just the right candidate is able to operate from a home office.

What is SC Magazine? Well, let us ask you: Have you ever had a friend whose hacked Facebook account sent out spam? Ever received a letter from your bank that your credit card number was compromised? Ever get a phishing email asking you to click on something that looked real, but actually was a ploy to infect your computer with a virus?

Cyber crime is one of the fastest-growing criminal activities in the world. And it's never been more important to the pros who specialize in defending their organizations against these online attacks to have an independent information resource that gives them much-needed news, features, product reviews and events to help them tackle their day-to-day responsibilities more effectively.

To help with this mission, SC Magazine needs a talented, organized and motivated special projects editor Overview to manage all special and custom content for SC Magazine. Applicable products are produced ad hoc, as well as scheduled per the annual editorial calendar. They include but are not limited to special research projects, such as Market Briefs; eBooks; Spotlights; 20/20 webcasts; InFocus videos, custom publications executed by SC Magazine for vendor partners; and more. Indeed, if the pro filling this post has additional strong ideas to help continue the growth of SC Magazine's already burgeoning portfolio, we'd want to hear them. Currently, applicable products are always high-quality and are either objective, independent editorial content which is underwritten by vendors or custom publications whose content is driven by an advertiser.

In overseeing the execution of special projects from start to finish, you report into and will work closely with the VP of editorial to ensure that all editorial standards, deadlines and any contractual obligations agreed prior to the start of the project are met. The role involves writing features, commissioning content from freelancers, making sure content is delivered on time, editing content to meet required standards and more. As such, you will be responsible for liaising with clients when necessary, as well as appropriate sales reps, production and editorial team members, freelance writers/reporters, other internal departments or any other outside vendors whose assistance is necessary to the completion of a project. In the event that any custom projects include video or virtual events, you may be tasked with moderating discussions, recruiting editorial team members or contractors to moderate discussions, creating questions and/or content, etc.

The special projects editor should have proven experience in journalism, such as for a B2B/trade publication, consumer publication, news/magazine website, etc. You will need to manage and prioritize a packed work schedule and should come armed with a creative and entrepreneurial zeal. You must be flexible, ready to adapt to often quickly changing situations and have a knack for never letting folks see you sweat, remaining calm and collected under pressure. Positivity and the willingness, as well as the ability, to deftly navigate complex situations are musts.

Responsibilities include:

-Article commissioning from contributors and freelancers and editing
-Writing features and news as needed
-Liaising with sales, advertisers and other team members on custom projects
-Working with and agreeing a layout and/or design with art director
-Meeting editorial and all other deadlines
-Strengthening industry ties with the information security industry

Skills/Experience:

-Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or other relevant field
-Proven experience in journalism as an editor
-Proven experience and track record of success as an editorial project manager
-Ability to manage and effectively work with freelancers and other contracted staff
-Strict adherence to deadlines and editorial standards
-Strong writing/reporting skills with the ability to tailor copy to meet various requirements as needed
-Team player with the ability to collaborate and stay calm under pressure
-Some knowledge of layout and design
- Some experience with special projects and knowledge of IT or IT/cyber security issues
