Job Description:
The Senior Development Editor is an experienced editor within the Academic English and Literacy team, American English Language Teaching, responsible for independently managing the development, content-editing, and production of print and digital products on time and on budget. This position reports to the Managing Editor.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage the development of multiple key titles to meet deadlines and market needs
- Manage freelancers and vendors regularly
- Participate in the planning and implementation of market research
- Prepare budgets and financials under the direction of the Managing Editor or Publisher when necessary
- Translate market research into the product development process to ensure titles are competitive
- Manage and motivate authors through all stages of the writing process
- Create a collaborative work environment with editorial, marketing, market development, media, design, art editing, and other internal departments to ensure the ultimate success of the product
- Edit and prepare manuscripts and art specs for turnover to Design
- Proof all stages of manuscript in all formats, including art
- Participate in the planning, implementation and proofing of audio, video, websites, DVDs, Classroom Presentation Tools, and other media programs
- Ensure all text, photo and audio permissions are secured
- Establish, implement, and maintain agreed schedules
- Run series status meetings as required
- Ensure administrative details are handled (e.g., permissions, reviewer invoices, etc.)
- Assist in conceptualization of product
- Provide guidance to less experienced editorial staff

- Ability to work cooperatively within the project team to keep projects on schedule, within budget, and at a high quality level
- Ability to work independently on all aspects of editing to ensure the following: pedagogical effectiveness, market appropriateness, consistency, accuracy, legal acceptability, and appropriate realization of the original intent of the work
- Ability to independently manage numerous projects through to completion
- Ability to take initiative in the development of materials to meet the requirements of the project brief
- Ability to keep relevant documents and records pertaining to projects up-to-date, accurate, and easily accessible for other parties
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to motivate and guide authors


Job Requirements:

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher and exhibit excellent communication, time-management and negotiation skills. Should have 5+ years development editing experience, preferably in ESL/ELT. Must be able to successfully pass the OUP Editing Test. MS Office required including strong Word, Outlook, and Excel skills. Qualified candidate must be able to multi-task, work quickly, efficiently, and flexibly, and must be detail oriented. The position is located at the New York Oxford University Press office.
