Senior Journal Development Editor

The Journal Development Editor is responsible for the success of a defined set of cell biology journals within the Biological Sciences publishing group. This involves prioritisation of journals for development and the setting and implementation of journal plans accordingly, as well as supporting our stakeholders (Editors, authors, reviewers, and societies). The aims are to optimise the publishing service, optimise commercial opportunities and to increase submissions. Specific areas of responsibility include:
_Developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with Editors-in-Chief, society contacts, Editorial Board members and other stakeholders, as their point of contact for publishing matters.
_Resolving queries and corresponding with Editors by email, phone and in person, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion and escalating when required.
_Building relationships with key contacts within the fields the journals operate in.
_Prioritise journals for development or maintenance in line with company strategy.
_Devise and implement journal plans accordingly, amending as required.
_Develop knowledge of fields journals operate within (e.g. to identify important journals/features/hot topics etc) and use knowledge to actively identify journal development opportunities for BioMed Central.
_Manage set-up activities for journals within your cluster within expected timeframes.
_Proactively flag and implement improvements to journal development processes where required.
_Work with Acquisitions Editors to research and identify gaps in the portfolio where there are opportunities for a new journal.
_Investigate opportunities for the transfer of existing journals to BioMed Central.
_Assist with generating leads and opportunities for potential journal acquisitions through attendance at conferences, and liaising with Editors, society representatives and key opinion leaders.
D. Increase article inflow and citation share
_Work with internal and external Editors and related contacts to increase submissions.
_Increase the portfolio_s share of citations compared to the competition, through article inflow and appropriate marketing.
_Ensure appropriate representation in indexing services and work to ensure journals are performing at level for acceptance by selective services.
_Ensure that journals receive appropriate promotion (e.g. blurbs, press releases, Twitter etc) as per targets set.
_Drive the commissioning of content, as per journal plans.
E. Editorial Boards
_Ensure Editorial Boards are representative of subject breadth, customer geography/demographics, and include emerging markets. Work with internal and external Editors to keep Editorial Boards engaged and refreshed.
_Plan, hold and follow up on Editorial Board meetings, in conjunction with Editors.
F. Journal management
_Ensure that authors and reviewers who contact a journal receive appropriate support from the Publisher, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion (2 working days) and upscale when required.
_Prepare responses to complaints received via our author survey.
_Monitor data on peer-review service to optimise manuscript flow. Pre-empt issues and work with the Editorial Office as well as internal and external Editors to resolve.
_Handle contract renewals and honorarium negotiations in a timely fashion, consulting with colleagues as necessary.
G. Commercial and marketing opportunities
_Ensure journals are appropriately represented through all relevant avenues e.g. conferences marketing exchanges, mailings,
_Attend conferences including preparation, setting objectives and providing reports of achievements post conference.
_Represent the company at scientific conferences when required to improve market knowledge, to network within the community, receive feedback on the journals and to promote BioMed Central journals and open access.
_Assist in generating leads for commercial opportunities such as sponsored supplements and follow up as necessary to ensure these are realized.
_Pro-actively flag bottlenecks and potential process improvements.
_Interact with other departments as necessary as a member of project teams to achieve certain goals.
_Ensure journal websites and any further external information sources are kept up-to-date.
_Ensure that internal documentation is up to date and that information is easy to find and use.
_To undertake other duties as assigned by your manager from time to time
- This position may suit a candidate with between 2 and 5 years_ experience in a STM publishing role
- Educated to degree level, with a biomedical background
- An interest in open access publishing
- Knowledge of publishing process and related matters
- Customer focused
- Excellent communication and influence skills
- Pleasant and tactful manner
- Strong organisational skills, with attention to detail
- Able to complete tasks, working to (often competing) deadlines
- Analytical skills
- A positive and proactive approach to problem-solving in both daily tasks and more complex troubleshooting
- Able to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
- A high level of computer literacy (including MS Office, Outlook and internet browsers)
- Willing to travel occasionally and represent BioMed Central at external events
- Previous experience working in the publishing industry
- Experience of developing and maintaining productive and friendly relations/partnerships with external contacts
