National Journal seeks a highly ambitious, motivated, entrepreneurial individual to join our events team, known as National Journal LIVE, and contribute to the promotion and growth of our media properties. National Journal LIVE is known in Washington for creating must-attend events, born out of National Journal’s editorial integrity, which draw audiences including key decision makers, influential media insiders, advocacy leaders, senior Capitol Hill staff, and government officials. This position oversees large advertiser programs, driven by integral events ranging from small opinion leader dinners to large engagements like panel discussions, policy summits, conferences and the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Weekend. This position also provides leadership and manages daily operations for National Journal LIVE’s event logistics team and looks for new ways to advance the National Journal and National Journal LIVE brand to a national audience through events and special engagements.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Direct, manage and train the event logistics team on best practices in event production and client management, ensure all quality standards are met
  • Assist the general manager of National Journal LIVE in developing event strategies including new product development, event execution and audience building
  • Oversee all creative, technical and logistical elements involved in production and execution of National Journal LIVE’s large-scale, high profile events
  • Work closely with clients through event planning process, meeting client goals while also maintaining National Journal’s comprehensive editorial and ethical standards
  • Serve as a liaison with internal relationship managers, sales and marketing teams
  • Work closely with internal contacts across all departments finding new ways to advance the National Journal LIVE brand
  • Strategize tactics of finding new audiences, recruiting guests, and retaining attendees to meet desired specifications including audience size and composition
  • Scout, select, and contract event sites
  • Manage all event costs in line with allocated budgets
  • Negotiate long-term contracts with quality vendors
  • Oversee the design and printing of all event materials
  • Develop new ways to capture and report ROI data for advertisers Cultivate strong relationships with internal and external client decision-makers around events
  • Develop an understanding of the politics and policy community and its key drivers
  • Assist in the management of the events webpage
  • Staff all events
  • Serve as an enterprising, innovative, and productive team contributor on colleagues’ projects and for National Journal LIVE department-wide initiatives

  • Persuasive communication skills and self-possession in presentation
  • Effective negotiation skills and the ability to understand and negotiate contracts
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies
  • Ability to use social media effectively
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Flexibility to travel for events held outside of the Washington, DC area
  • Spirit of generosity, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude
  • Bachelor’s degree and five years related experience
