Macmillan Publishers is seeking a SEO/SEM Manager to work with the central digital marketing team, which is a service department to Macmillan’s publishing houses. The SEO/SEM Manager will work closely with the publishers, our Director of Metadata and Marketing Analysts to develop a profitable SEM program and monitor and improve SEO of our Web properties.

The successful candidate is systematic and meticulous with detail and is effective at analyzing diverse data sets to draw useful business insights and actionable recommendations. The successful candidate has significant professional experience in SEO and SEM, and is able to apply their knowledge to our unique business model.

An interest in the analytics landscape and emerging platforms is essential, as the team’s responsibilities and workflows are constantly evolving.

Main Responsibilities
• Regularly review our community sites (,,, blogs, and landing pages for compliance with SEO best practices
• Perform keyword research and make content recommendations based on research
• Review technical set up (metadata tags, image tags, site maps, etc.) and optimize (or work with developer to optimize)
• Review and support link acquisition strategy
• Analyze and monitor competitor sites and competitor practices in SEM
• Provide reporting on SEO/SEM to stakeholders at the publishers
• Stay on top of industry changes relating to SEO/SEM and communicate to stakeholders
• Provide training on SEO/SEM and/or work with the training department to develop and update relevant courses
• Develop an ROI-driven approach to SEM, Facebook, and Twitter advertising and work with the publishers to develop and implement best practices
• Tap into trending keywords to promote our backlist and midlist titles
• Continuously perform tests to inform our approach and develop best practices
• Provide support and advise to publishers on lead title Paid Search campaigns

• Minimum 3 years experience in SEO/SEM
• Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience with web analytics packages (Omniture, WebTrends, or Google Analytics)
• Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience with Google Paid Search, Google Display Advertising, and Social Media marketing
• Ability to collect data, analyze trends, identify strategic recommendations and present them in an logical manner
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills (ability to synthesize, organize and present data) for interacting with internal clients of all levels and functions
• Understanding of and proven interest in the publishing industry and changes in the marketplace
• An innovative, positive, and self-directed attitude
• Organized, self-motivated, hardworking, dedicated, with a strong sense of accountability

Not Required but a Plus
• Experience working with Education or Publishing companies

Education Requirement
• BA/BS with significant coursework in marketing
