The Opportunity and Division The Copy Editor and successful incumbent will join a division that promotes internal growth. S/he will be a key member of a top-notch team and assist the staff with developing and implementing new processes. For more information about the Trade Publishing division: http://bit.ly/WLGuKi Summary The Copy Editor will review a high-volume of materials related to Scholastic’s rich front and backlist titles, from picture books to middle grade/young adult fiction and nonfiction. S/he will work closely with a team of Managing Editors and Production Editors and will be responsible for electronically copyediting Word documents and PDFs, including shorter manuscripts, jacket copy, marketing copy/fact sheets, eBook extras, reprint corrections, and other ancillary materials. The Copy Editor will also proofread some of these materials in later stages, review jacket mechanicals, assist in copyediting any heavily rewritten novels, and help maintain the department’s house style and high standards and will manage a robust freelancer list.Qualifications:•2 to 4 years of copyediting experience•Superior copyediting and proofreading skills and meticulous attention to detail•Expert understanding of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, while able to respect author/editor style•Intimate knowledge of industry guides and resources, including The Chicago Manual of Style, Words Into Type, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary•Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining high standards and juggling multiple projects•Excellent computer skills and especially adept at Track Changes. •Experience electronically editing PDFs a plus•Book publishing experience a strong plusCover letters are appreciated, but not required.
