The California Academy of Sciences is looking for a unique and talented User Experience/Interaction Designer to join the Digital Engagement team. In this role, the Interaction Designer will create integrated interactive design experiences across onsite and online applications on a wide range of platforms. Using text, images, videos, audio, animations, and other digital and visual effects, they may work on projects such as Internet sites, mobile solutions, museum exhibit interactives, online learning materials, and other interactive applications.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Digital Engagement, the Interaction Designer will help to continuously innovate and evolve digital interactive experiences. The role will be an essential part of the Digital Engagement team working closely with producers, developers and museum stakeholders to create dynamic, engaging experiences to support the Academy goals. The ideal candidate must present a strong portfolio of innovative and engaging designs.

Responsible for and deliver on all phases of the design process
Partner with stakeholders to internalize and translate business goals into concept briefs
Create designs and experiences to ensure that it is visually intuitive and impactful, meets brand guidelines, and exhibits all of the best practices for presenting content to the targeted audience
Evolve and work within design systems and guidelines to ensure consistency, uniformity, and high level of usability across websites, apps, and products
Brainstorm, research, wire-frame, design and refine user experiences - all within specified product requirements and deadlines
Deliver on responsive design and present content across multiple viewports, devices, and platforms
Use metrics and frequent user research data to influence design
Design and deliver interaction flows, screen mockups, and wireframes to high-fidelity HTML prototypes
Architect and perform usability sessions with key stakeholders and users to get feedback to evolve design concepts and user interfaces
Work closely with a cross-functional team that includes project managers, developers, other designers and content teams
Contribute positively to design discussions visually, verbally, and in writing
Evangelize design principles to stakeholders
Follow all Academy safety regulations
Other duties as assigned

A strong portfolio that demonstrates thoughtful, innovative problem solving with a focus on insights into human behavior and illustrating a diverse set of technologies is a must. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:
B.A./B.S. in Human-Computer Interaction Design, Web Design, Graphic Design, or related field
Three or more years of interactive design experience on paid assignments

Exceptional user interface and experience design skills and understanding of user-centered design disciplines and principles
Ability to quickly grasp and distill highly complex user design issues into clean, understandable solutions
Candidate must flourish in a fast-paced, interactive, dynamic and dead-line driven culture and environment
Ability to use frameworks and toolkits to quickly test functional design solutions
Experience with design industry tools and technologies such as, but not limited to: Adobe Suite, Drupal, PHP, HTML/HTML5, CSS, Sass, Javascript, jQuery, etc.
Personable and diplomatic team player with the ability to collaborate and communicate well
Strong interest in emergent technologies
Familiarity with Agile Project Management methodology a plus
A passion for science, technology, and science education is a strong plus

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.
