We’re looking for a managing editor with 2-4 years of experience to make sure the trains run on time. The ideal candidate should be organized, consistent, and deadline-oriented. This person should be a pro when it comes to planning. The managing editor’s responsibilities include:Checking in with lead editors and writers to see how they’re doing and letting the EIC know of any outstanding progress that she should note.Keeping everyone moving forward in the same direction and at speed operationally, AKA herding cats.Taking a long-term view of assignments and ensuring seasonal assignments are made with enough lead timeManaging the tracking sheet and setting the deadlines on that scheduleWorking with the EIC to plan the yearly editorial calendar and publishing schedulesCalculating estimated manpower needs for future workloadsWorking with the editors to help them find and vet new hires or freelancersOrienting new staff and writers as to how we do thingsApproving invoicesJournalism and editorial experience, especially when it comes to planning and scheduling, is a requirement. A few years running editorial teams is also a must but we do not expect to hire a veteran for this role. Experience working on editorial content focused on testing and product review or recommendation is a plus. This is a full-time job.
