The American Academy of Actuaries, an 18,000-member professional organization, is seeking an energetic and seasoned self-starter to serve as Senior Editor. This position, which reports to the Director of Communications, has primary responsibility for maintaining an association-wide editorial process that promotes the Academy and its work, including editing Contingencies, the Academy’s award-winning bimonthly magazine.The successful candidate will have at least 10 years’ experience in journalism, publications, and related fields. He/she must be able to work with Academy leadership, members, colleagues, and vendors and manage multiple deadlines.The Senior Editor supervises production of Academy publications, develops and maintains budgets for publications, and supervises and collaborates with outside vendors, including freelance writers, designers, advertising sales reps, and printers.The ideal candidate will have:•Excellent reporting, writing, rewriting, and copy-editing skills;•Curiosity about and basic knowledge of major national financial, professional, and public policy issues;•Solid detail-oriented organizational skills, particularly a facility for handling multiple tasks at the same time and the ability to keep publications on schedule;•Creativity in developing actuarially related topics and finding authors to write on these topics;•Polished interpersonal skills to work with in-house colleagues and manage staff;•Intelligence and humor;•Initiative and creative vision.A Bachelor's degree in Journalism or English, with some coursework or professional experience in economics/finance and mathematics, is preferred.
