Reporting to the Deputy Vice President of University Alumni and Development Marketing and Communications, Columbia Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the publication’s overall story development, writing, editing, and production in both print and online. Our Editor-in-Chief also partners with the Chief Creative Officer within the Office of Alumni and Development as an editorial adviser.

Columbia Magazine is published quarterly, and is the one print publication all alumni receive from Columbia. The magazine is distributed to over 300,000 alumni, donors, faculty and staff, and friends of Columbia around the world. The magazine is evolving for today's media environment, by exploring online and mobile platforms as distribution vehicles and distinct modes of storytelling. Columbia Magazine has consistently earned high approval ratings from readers and has won some thirty national awards for writing, design, photography, and general excellence since 2008.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
•Supervises story development, writing, editing, managing and publishing of Columbia Magazine (print and digital); leads multi-issue story idea planning and development; undertakes critical role in reshaping the magazine (editorial, design, digital, advertising, and sponsorship)
•Translates complex ideas into clear, accurate prose and creative graphics, video, and photography
•Finds the most compelling way to tell stories that reflects the University’s strengths and priorities
•Manages production budget
•Drives editorial content and production schedules
•Oversees magazine personnel and freelancers (writers, designers, illustrators, photographers, videographers); manages an editorial staff and provides clear feedback to writers on story structure, content, and style to help them consistently deliver award-winning stories

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. A minimum of seven (7) years related editorial and publishing experience required; Prior experience managing (or significant participation in) a print publication’s transition to online, mobile, and social platforms and an understanding of how to best tell stories across print and digital channels and a variety of devices (tablet, smartphone, etc.) for a diverse readership base strongly preferred. Work-related background in higher education is a plus. Experience as a strong leader with a demonstrated editorial career track record of evolving a publication(s) in print and digital editions. Working knowledge of desktop publishing on both PC and Mac platforms desired.

Must possess a strong writing style and journalistic sensibility appropriate for discerning alumni readers, as well as a demonstrated understanding of editorial variety and pacing within an issue. Demonstrates the intellectual grasp and curiosity to uncover the stories that matter—across campuses, within the global center network, and among alumni. Possesses a deep, demonstrated understanding of the challenges of today’s digital media landscape.

A strong commitment to sharing current news about the University and its alumni, ensuring that the magazine’s digital presence adds richness and immediacy to the quarterly magazine content.
Skills and energy to serve as an ambassador for the magazine, whether out-and-about on campus or utilizing Columbia’s global network to promote the publication, listen to alumni, and make the magazine even stronger. Must be able to clearly communicate the mission and priorities of Columbia University.
Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills. Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot, in addition to the ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment. Demonstrated ability to effectively partner with a diverse group of administrators and academic leaders. Must be able to negotiate issues, resolve problems, and persuade others as appropriate. The successful candidate must be a strategic thinker, effective in moving agendas forward, and politically savvy. Should be discrete and be able to work well with all levels of management, both internally and externally. Candidate should be flexible in nature, and have sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization.
