- Full Time
Washingtonian is looking for an aggressive, resourceful reporter with a knack for writing narrative to work as a full-time staff writer at the magazine.
The mission of our monthly print magazine and daily news website is twofold: We tell readers how Washington works. And we tell them how to get the most out of living here. We do this through deep, distinctive reporting about both Washington the hometown and Washington the company town. In a city whose major industry affects the entire nation, our job is to cover the power personalities, local obsessions, and back-stage cat-fights that are often off the radar of the national media, but crucial to explaining the workings of the federal city.
Your job will be to work sources, scour the daily sound bites, and bring us attention-getting ideas—in abundance. You should be something of an omnivore, as interested in a spectacular crime story as in one about a juicy battle between two titans of real estate. The bulk of your job will be writing narratives of up to 6,000 words for the feature well, but you’d also contribute regularly to the news departments at the front of the book and the website, and periodically offer sharp ideas for cover and service packages. Reporting experience is mandatory, as are clips that demonstrate stylish writing and a strong comfort level with magazine story structure and tone. Knowledge of Washington’s DNA isn’t essential; a keen interest in learning it is.
To apply, please send your résumé and 10 clips to email@example.com. Clips should be hyperlinked or in PDF format. Do not send emails larger than 5 MB. No phone calls. Washingtonian serves a diverse region and seeks a diverse staff. We’re looking for people from all backgrounds.
