HITN Learning, a division of HITN, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Learning Content in our Brooklyn New York office.  The Director of Learning Content will lead development and provide editorial expertise for cutting-edge transmedia learning resources serving three- to eight-year-old children and their adult caregivers, parents, and teachers.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated passion for the mission of HITN and a personal commitment to furthering the goals of the organization.  S/he will have had meaningful experience in five areas:  (1) early childhood education, (2) facilitation/coaching focus in the development of early learning math skills and vocabulary in ways that are playful, engaging and effective, (3) meeting the unique learning needs of Hispanic/Latino children including those marginalized by poverty, language, ethnicity or handicapping conditions, (4) helping parents and caregivers provide fun learning experiences that will help their preschool children enter school kindergarten ready and advance development to grade 3, and (5) understanding the role that digital media, used appropriately and intentionally, can play in helping teachers, caregivers and parents provide personalized learning experiences for every young child.   An active presence in Hispanic/Latino community, business or political circles would be a plus.

The selected candidate will be a key part of a growing expert and fast-paced team of digital and non-digital designers, child development specialists and educators developing suites of research-based transmedia resources.  These will include child-facing, professional and family resources, across various media types:

  • broadcast or streaming TV and video
  • touchscreen apps
  • web-based
  • print
  • manipulatives


The position will report directly to the General Manager, Education and will serve as part of the HITN Learning executive team consisting of the GM, Education; VP/Executive Producer; and Director, Product Management; and will also interface with HITN’s Chief Learning Officer. The position will have one direct report, an Editor.

The successful candidate will:

  • provide curriculum-focused consulting, editorial and technical assistance to a talented and cross-functional team charged with developing the highest quality learning product resources for young children
  • ensure all products and processes are developmentally, culturally and linguistically appropriate for young children
  • collaborate with editorial and design teams to promote optimal user experiences and provide content direction for products that go into development
  • develop professional learning experiences focused on digital media for teachers, parents and educators in informal learning organizations
  • identify appropriate themes to help carry the curriculum content across the multiple platforms
  • support the design and development of non-digital resources
  • vet all content, themes and final products
  • directly manage the editorial part of the product development process, including developmental edits, copyedits and proofreads
  • with VP/Executive Producer, set up internal and external providers and processes by which new product development takes place
  • help develop editorial portion of P&L budgets and keep development operations within budget
  • help develop editorial portion of schedules and keep the development operations on schedule
  • collect and consolidate guidance from our education advisors, evaluators and pilot users to enhance the educational value of the transmedia resources
  • participate in the external evaluation, contracts and focus group research for formative and summative studies
  • Interface with and be part of presentations to key potential customers brought forward by executive manager or market partners


  • Minimum of 7+ years in educational or children’s media content development, with at least 3 years managing editorial or content development staff or external developers in developing mobile apps or online interactive instruction and in print
  • deep knowledge of early learning curriculum content, instructional design principles and concepts for young children to provide direction for new product concepts; evaluate and flesh out concepts with HITN Learning team
  • two or more years teaching PreK-3 children
  • experience developing content to promote early learning in innovative and engaging ways
  • demonstrated commitment to excellence in children’s media, particularly for ethnic or linguistic minorities, or any under-represented group
  • demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with external partners
  • facility in MS Word, Googledocs,  Basecamp or other file sharing platforms
  • excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • knowledge of current early learning research and the requirements of early childhood settings, such as Head Start, congregate day care, home-based day car, public/private school PreK classrooms, etc.
  • ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • proactive problem solver
  • facility in speaking, reading and writing Spanish
  • minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field– master’s or PhD. preferred
