Internship Description

The Smithsonian Media Ad Sales Internship is designed to provide a meaningful, hands-on learning experience. The Smithsonian Media Ad Sales Internship offers a unique opportunity to learn about all aspects of publishing (print and digital) ad sales and marketing. The intern will make meaningful contributions to sales projects and will build their writing, analytic, organizational and project management skills.

Through weekly ad sales meetings and with the Mentor, the Ad Sales Team, and Marketing team, the Intern will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Advertising Sales process while gaining valuable real-world experience. Through regular development meetings with the Mentor, the Intern and Mentor will evaluate the skills learned and experiences of the internship, reflect on how they apply to the Intern’s education/career goals, and chart a course for the coming months.

The intern will gain first-hand exposure to the ad sales process and will:

  • Be exposed to tools and used  and instructed how to interpret to build rationale that supports Smithsonian magazine and Smithsonian.com’s inclusion in media recommendations
  • Learn about the  print and digital RFP process by assisting the sales team with completion
  • Build an understanding of what’s required for a sales meeting with clients through creating custom  materials for presentations and projects
  • Develop an understanding of the competitive landscape by researching and generating monthly advertising activity  reports
  • Garner knowledge of Smithsonian’s editorial, and how to interpret for specific advertising categories by developing an editorial database index
  • Learn how to use online syndicated resources

The candidate who would most benefit from this experience will be tech savvy, reliable, organized, and self-motivated, with great attention to detail and the ability to work successfully as part of a team.  We’re looking for excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with a professional and courteous manner. Candidates should be currently enrolled in BA/MA degree program.

Please submit a cover letter indicating your interest in the internship, resume, and writing sample.

Final selection will be subject to the intern’s successful completion of a pre-appointment background check.
