Media Relations Coordinator

Status: Part-time Contractor (20 to 24 hrs/week)
Reports to: Public Relations Manager and Director of Marketing

Summary: Responsible for assisting and supporting the public relations manager with all aspects of media relations activities at Understood, as well as performing administrative assignments as needed for the benefit of the marketing team. Must be an enthusiastic self-starter with strong writing, media relations and digital communication skills.

Essential Responsibilities/Duties

  • Utilize strong writing and editing skills for integrated campaigns, projects and deliverables
  • Implement public relations strategies and integrated marketing plans
  • Establish strong relationships with relevant media to generate awareness of Understood, thought leadership, experts in learning and attention issues, content team, events and news
  • Create and monitor editorial publishing calendars for targeted media outlets
  • Establish successful, productive relationships with team members
  • Conduct basic research, including building media lists, measuring public relations results, compiling press clips and writing media placement reports
  • Interact with agency partners (public relations and advertising) on a regular basis and provide meeting notes/follow-up reports as needed
  • Work with vendors, including photographers, caterers and research consultants as needed
  • Show excellent judgment and the ability to solve problems independently
  • Comprehend and implement integrated marketing and communications strategies

Technical Skills

  • Must possess excellent writing and editing skills
  • Must pay close attention to detail, particularly in editing
  • Must be proficient in using the Microsoft Office suite of products, as well as other Internet tools and technologies such as Gmail, Meltwater (media monitoring/database software), Slack, Wrike and Dropbox; Internet research and PowerPoint skills are a must

Interpersonal Skills

Develop and maintain productive relationships with employees (particularly with marketing and content teams), contractors, agency partners and vendors as well as with the editors, reporters, bloggers and influencers

Requirements

  • BA/BS Communications/Marketing/Journalism/Public Relations/Integrated Marketing
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of professional public relations experience (agency experience a plus)
