Sactown is the city magazine for Sacramento, founded by editors who were previously NYC-based staff or freelance writers for Money Magazine, InStyle Magazine, SmartMoney, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Metropolis Magazine, and elsewhere.
We are currently looking for a talented and experienced art director to join our team and collaborate with the editors on a national-quality magazine with a strong visual presence that champions great design, photography and illustration. While the title is Art Director, we're also considering talented and qualified designers who have not yet been an Art Director.
Sactown has won many design, illustration and photography awards since its launch in 2006 (including Folio Awards, City & Regional Magazine Awards and Western Publishing Association awards), and has been included in Communications Arts Photo Annual twice. Our senior photographer is regular contributor to The New York Times, and we have commissioned illustrations from artists like Philip Burke, Gary Taxali, Hal Mayforth, Mike Byers, Gary Hovland and Matt Chase.
We’re especially looking for a designer who is deeply passionate and knowledgeable about typography. We’re looking for someone who loves exploring type and its many applications, fashioning creative, dynamic, eye-catching headlines and spreads. This is not the right job for a designer accustomed to placing pre-formatted fonts in designated slots on the page.
Naturally, we’re looking for someone who is proficient with the Mac OS system, as well as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Familiarity with Adobe InCopy is preferred since that’s what we use. The ideal candidate will also have excellent production skills such as color correcting, pre-flighting, press check experience, etc (although we rarely do in-person press checks since we print in Los Angeles). The art director will also be responsible for shipping each issue to the printer.
Primary responsibilities will include laying out the bimonthly magazine (with plans to go monthly), designing features and departments, and maintaining and updating the design and functionality of the magazine's website: SactownMag.com.
Secondary duties will include occasional ad design and the design of miscellaneous marketing materials ranging from advertising media kits to sales collateral material and more. We’re also looking for a designer who is looking to push himself or herself and explore other areas of design, like motion graphics and video.
Experience in publication design (magazine or alt-weekly) is required. Please do not apply without any professional publication experience.
