Social Media Community Manager
Are you visually creative? Do you like telling stories about people? Do you have a strong editorial sense for packaging news stories for a diverse global audience?
We are recruiting an experienced and dynamic social media officer to generate empathy, understanding and support for refugees by helping to manage UNHCR’s global English accounts from our New York office.
UNHCR social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are followed by more than 10 million people across several languages. Social media is a central and essential component of UNHCR’s efforts to engage key audiences, both in our everyday communications work and around major awareness, media and advocacy campaigns. As the number of forcibly displaced people has grown in recent years, so too have our social media communities. Managing these accounts, developing content for them and moderating comments and conversations requires a team of skilled experts with solid editorial judgement, high technical proficiency, and keen insight into audiences.
Based out of UNHCR’s newly established Global Desk in Manhattan, the position will be a core member of UNHCR’s global and geographically dispersed social media team. We are offering an initial six-month contract, with the possibility of longer-term employment.
The successful candidate will bring six years of professional experience (five with Master’s degree), including relevant work in news, communications, or for a digital agency - including producing social media content and managing accounts. We expect your passion for the medium, your excellent editorial judgement, and your knowledge of new trends and tools to be reflected in your personal social media accounts. We are also looking for someone with the skills for growing partnerships with the major and upcoming social media and digital players, working with influencers and celebrities, and strategically placing UNHCR content to reach a large and diverse audience.
Excellent English writing skills are essential. Spanish or French is an asset. Knowledge of the UN system and communications style is desirable. Knowledge of digital tools (including Adobe Creative Cloud) and social media tools (for calendaring, publishing, monitoring, reporting) is highly desirable.
