ABOUT INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S.

A non-partisan, non-profit organization, Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) addresses a fundamental problem in America: the extreme polarization of our nation and our politics. Our mission is to restore critical thinking, facts, reason, and civility to public discourse. Through a series of Oxford-style debates, IQ2US provides a critical forum for balanced and intelligent discussion of issues ranging from domestic and foreign policy to cultural trends and technological innovations.  IQ2US debates are recorded in front of a live audience and distributed through public radio, podcast, and a number of digital streaming platforms.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Research Associate will work directly with the VP of Programming and Manager of Editorial Operations to produce research content for the debates. The Associate will conduct in-depth research for upcoming debates, including compiling research briefings, drafting editorial and marketing copy, and managing the “Briefing Room” component of the IQ2US website. The Associate will also be responsible for proofreading and fact-checking copy produced by the editorial and marketing teams.  S/he has a strong work ethic, loves writing, editing, and proof reading.  S/he comes with an interest in a wide range of policy topics and a commitment to promoting balanced civil discourse.

POSITION RESPONSBILITIES

  • Compile research on various topics
  • Draft copy on debate topics 
  • Assist with the development of debate ideas and panelist searches
  • Maintain the “Briefing Room” section of the IQ2US website
  • Proofread and fact-check copy for internal and external use
  • Support live debates, post-debate dinners, and receptions
  • Manage administrative tasks for the research department
  • Work on special projects as assigned

REQUIRED BACKGROUND & CAPABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree  
  • A minimum of two years of related work experience
  • Excellent journalistic writing ability, research skills, and strong editorial judgment
  • Clear and concise writing skills, including the ability to summarize complex information
  • Strong proofreading skills, accuracy, and attention to detail
  • An innate curiosity and deep interest in continued learning, current events, pursuit of inventive new ideas in multiple formats
  • Strong commitment to promoting balanced public discourse and seeking intellectually respectable arguments on both sides of a given debate
  • The ability to work independently, multi-task, and meet deadlines
  • Must thrive under deadline pressure and simultaneously manage multiple priorities 
  • Ability to work late evenings on show days; periodic travel is required
