Job Purpose: The Media Relations Director leads the agency’s national and business media relations practice and is responsible for growing the agency’s overall media relations competency. S/he serves as a strategic consultant to the agency account teams and its vast array of clients, providing best practices, training and guidance on how to work effectively with all types of media.  

S/he is a creative storyteller who collaborates with account teams located across the agency to identify newsworthy topics, develop strategic media plans that yield results and pitch national business media. In addition to spearheading media relations outreach, s/he coaches teams on how to effectively pitch business, national and local media, including broadcast, online, print and bloggers. Depending on the account need and structure, this person may also be embedded on a specific account team to assist with regular national and business media pitching efforts.

Duties:

  • Assume a highly visible leadership role in the agency; lead G&S’ top-tier media relations efforts
  • Generate broadcast, online and print placements across G&S’ account base
  • Develop results-driven strategic media relations plans and measurement programs
  • Develop and execute media tours, deskside briefings, salon dinners, and other media-facing initiatives
  • Oversee media training service offerings, conduct media training sessions and inform the direction of G&S’ media training capabilities across the agency
  • Grow existing accounts and projects, in support of organic growth efforts
  • Serve as counselor to designated clients
  • Empower and mentor account teams to create and execute results-driven media strategies; coach teams on how to pitch media 
  • Meet regularly with account leads to better understand their business and media relations support needs  
  • Grow G&S’ media relations practice
  • Stay current on news and PR trends in the industry; lead agency’s media relations education and learning initiatives; share best-practices and trends across agency
  • Function as a consultant and resource for  pursuing new business opportunities and proposal development

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of media landscape and digital tools
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with top-tier national media outlets and/or reporters that result in coverage
  • Possesses leadership and management experience; coaching and managing team members at varying experience levels
  • Experience advising C-level and executive spokespeople 
  • Keen understanding of the media landscape and effective storytelling techniques
  • Excellent writer and editor who can distill complex, often technical content into consumer and business media-friendly language
  • Strong project management skills, and ability to complete tasks on tight deadlines
  • Ability to discern when projects, requests and content are not strategic; strong and clear judgment
  • Experience and passion for presenting in front of large and small groups
  • Strong listening skills
  • Passion for mentoring teams
