The Chronicle of Higher Education is seeking an experienced editor to join the staff of its magazine, The Chronicle Review. The editor’s chief responsibility will be to commission and edit sharp, timely, compelling articles and essays that speak to the themes and concerns of the academy.

We’re looking for a generalist, someone interested in urban sociology, evolutionary psychology, the role of college in society, and sexual politics on campus. If you find a dispute among linguists newsworthy, and can also spitball about the history of the public intellectual and the plight of adjuncts, this might be the job for you.

You’ll need to be self-motivated, proactive, and attuned to how journalism is distributed and consumed online. You should be comfortable at the intersection of the academy, journalism, and the broader intellectual world. The job requires you to develop your own essay ideas and frame them for a sophisticated but non-specialist audience, and you should have a track record of editing for style and argument. You’ll cultivate relationships with writers, primarily scholars. The smart and engaging articles you develop will drive conversation in the academy.

The Chronicle is independently owned and based in Washington, D.C. Our pay is commensurate with experience, and our benefits are among the best in the business.

If this sounds like the place you want to make your mark, send a cover letter, resume, five clips (that you wrote or edited), and five brief pitches for story ideas to candidates@chronicle.com.

The Chronicle is an equal-opportunity employer.
