The Writer reports to the Managing Editor, and writes, edits, and produces original content for the School’s biannual alumni magazine, Columbia Business, and its corresponding website; the School news website; and the alumni website. S/he will oversee the scheduling, curation, and distribution of the monthly e-newsletter and generates ideas for features, profiles, news stories, and coverage of faculty research. This Individual writes, edits, and proofreads copy in accordance with house style and Chicago Manual of Style. S/he collaborates with writers inside and outside the University and with alumni, members of the administration, and faculty, on editorial projects. The Writer provides project management for select sections of Columbia Business magazine as well as for web content. S/he manages projects with attention to the brand, design, detail, accuracy, quality, and consistency. This individual will meet core and partnership values of teamwork, integrity, accountability, and respect.
1. Develops and writes features, profiles, news stories, and other content for a variety of audiences and outlets, both in print and online.
2. Generates content ideas and researches topics by interviewing alumni, faculty members, administrators, students, and others. Writes articles for the magazine that explore current trends and issues in business and that use interviews with alumni and faculty who serve as thought leaders to comment on or illustrate those topics; writes articles highlighting alumni accomplishments; translates research into substantive, engaging pieces that are readily accessible to business practitioners. Must be comfortable writing about business and financial topics, as well as about academic research. Translates technical topics into language easily understood by the general public. Keeps up-to-date with major trends in business and finance and MBA education.
3. Assists in the creation of multi-media content using video/audio/photography, or online production skills, or working with the in-house video producer to hire and oversee freelancers as needed.
4. Regularly posts stories to the Columbia Business and School news websites. Must be comfortable with using a Drupal-based CMS.
5. Oversees the creation of the monthly e-newsletter, which draws from already-posted stories. Must be comfortable using an HTML email-marketing template.
6. Edits, copyedits, and proofreads publications on an ongoing basis, ensuring consistency of style.
7. Attends and covers lectures and various School events throughout the year as needed. Helps maintain coverage schedule of upcoming events.
8. Maintains a consistent voice appropriate for the School and tailored to its various publications. Positions the School’s brand through content development. Monitors all communications with an eye to editorial appropriateness. Supports a School-wide visual and editorial identity and brand positioning.
9. Staff local alumni events, including Reunion Weekend, and perform additional duties and special projects as needed.
Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required. Two - Four years related experience required.
A writing sample is required; must have proficient writing and editing skills that are central to this job. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work with many levels of faculty and staff. Demonstrated computer proficiency required along with working knowledge of HTML. Must be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously within deadlines and work both independently and collaboratively. Some evening and weekend hours required.
Degree in communications, writing, or journalism preferred.
Experience as a content provider or project manager for websites preferred. Knowledge of Photoshop, and InDesign/InCopy workflows preferred.
