Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.
Job Title: Associate or Senior Editor
Department: Nature Sustainability
Location: London or New York
Nature Sustainability — a new interdisciplinary journal from Nature Research — will publish, from January 2018, the most significant research across a wide spectrum of natural, social and engineering sciences on sustainability, its policy dimensions and possible solutions. A crucial part of the journal’s mission is to highlight the role of integrated research on natural, social and technological systems and the interfaces between them, and to facilitate cross-disciplinary dialogue.
We wish to recruit an editor for the journal to cover the broad engineering and technology dimensions of sustainability research — we are looking for research expertise in environmental engineering, or related disciplines, and ideally a strong background in chemistry, Earth science, and statistics. Applicants should have a PhD and strong research record in the relevant discipline and, preferably, postdoctoral experience.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the team that is shaping a new academic journal. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Editor, Monica Contestabile, and with three editors from the natural and social sciences. Together, the Nature Sustainability team work on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and peer review, the commissioning and editing of Reviews and News & Views articles, and writing for the journal. Nature Sustainability is part of a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy and Nature Plants, among others.
This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills, the ability to absorb and appreciate new areas of research, and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are essential. Applicants should be dynamic, outgoing, and have excellent interpersonal skills. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences — willingness to travel is essential.
The position will be based in our London office, although there is also a possibility of joining our New York office. Please state your preferred location in your application. Note that candidates should already have the right to live and work in their preferred location.
Applications should include the following:
1. A cover letter explaining your interest in the position, and indicating salary expectation;
2. A CV detailing your education, relevant employment history, list of published scientific papers, and any other achievements that you feel demonstrates your suitability for the position.
3. A selection of 6–8 articles from the recent scientific literature that you feel capture the various aspects of sustainability research (provide the full reference and a link to the article, and give a brief rationale for your choice);
4. A 200-word Research Highlight on a relevant paper you select from the recent scientific literature.
