MoveOn.org’s “Resist & Win” 2018 election program centers on recruiting, training and supporting hundreds of volunteer leaders in more than 100 congressional districts to mobilize thousands of volunteers to join them in strategic movement-building and voter engagement actions--paired with the power of our cutting edge Video Lab, Analytics, Technology, Field, Digital, and Communications campaigning capacities.

We are determined to make the 2018 elections a turning point, helping Democrats win the House to create a roadblock to Trump & Republicans’ ability to advance their toxic agenda, while building the movement for racial, economic, immigrant, and climate justice, and electing new progressive champions who can help lead our country to a better future in races down ballot across the country.

With millions of members nationwide and a 20-year track record of winning electoral and progressive issue campaigns and breaking new digital and field organizing ground MoveOn is uniquely suited to power the progressive wave it will take to win back control of the U.S. House in 2018 and strengthen our collective movement.

As Director of Rapid Response Communications, you will help track the news as it relates to MoveOn and our key campaigns, and identify and lead key interventions to build relationships with journalists, earn media coverage, and influence national and local dialogue.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Insert MoveOn’s progressive frames and narratives about the 2018 elections into national and local media coverage and social media conversation, to shift coverage in ways that help our endorsed candidates win, with a focus on rapid-response interventions relevant to the media conversation taking place at the moment.
  • Immerse yourself in the news cycle, especially coverage that relates to politics and the elections, and identify regular intervention opportunities. You will be expected to hold East Coast business hours, beginning your day no later than 8 a.m. ET, to get a jump on the early morning news cycle.
  • Interact regularly with reporters on background and on the record, to help shape their coverage, including engaging with reporters and influencers via text, email, phone, social media, and other platforms, in real time.
  • Produce public-facing content under tight deadlines, including statements, messaging guidance, talking points, tweets and other social media content, op-eds, and blog posts. 
  • Support implementation of MoveOn’s broader media strategy, working with our Media Relations and Communications teams.
  • Identify how various parts of the organization may be able to take advantage of specific  rapid-response opportunities and coordinate with key team members—including the Social Media Manager, National Spokesperson, and members of our Communications, Video Lab, Platform, and Campaigning teams—as appropriate, to develop rapid-response content and interventions.
  • Innovate and pitch new strategy and tactics internally to shape our rapid-response work and create or improve systems for effective rapid-response work.
  • Lead regular calls on messaging and rapid-response strategy.
  • Use our communications channels, including social media and email services, in service of the position’s goals.
  • Coordinate externally with key allies and organizations, as useful. 
  • Be an active member of MoveOn’s communications team, including contributing to cross-team projects as necessary.
  • Incorporate feedback from supervisor and colleagues and follow organizational approval processes.
  • Be prepared for intensive work through the election season while maintaining a work-life balance. Time management is key. Since this is an election period, this isn’t a job that will fit neatly within traditional business hours.

     

 

Recommended skills and experience:

  • Three or more years of experience in journalism, media relations, or similar communications or content production roles.
  • Two or more years of experience in progressive advocacy and/or electoral campaigns.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills—both for media and for general audiences. Your writing should be sharp, personable, memorable, and free from grammatical, punctuation, or spelling errors. Knowledge of AP style is useful.
  • Superb editorial and political judgement, including a strong sense of which tactics will succeed and break through a crowded media environment and ability to identify risks and political downsides to potential messages and content.
  • Strong pitching ability: You’ve worked with journalists before, know how to package information to create a successful pitch, and have a track record of doing so.
  • Clear understanding of the political issue and advocacy climates, the progressive movement, and electoral politics.
  • Mastery of social media best practices and monitoring tools, media relations software and news distribution tools, and web publishing/content management systems.
  • Excellent, detail-oriented project management skills.
  • Creative thinker: You’re not afraid to take smart risks, experiment, and analyze.
  • Existing relationships with political and election reporters are useful.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to engage effectively with MoveOn staff and members, stakeholders, and external audiences including through traditional and social media.

     

Reports to: Director of Media Relations and Communications Management

Location: Position is remote. As part of our virtual office structure, you may be based anywhere in the continental U.S. Some travel will be required. This position will be expected to have availability during East Coast business hours, including tracking news and flagging opportunities no later than 8 a.m. ET; as this is a rapid-response election role, non-traditional hours will be required, and flexibility is important. We make a strong effort to prioritize work-life balance for our team.

 

Classification, Salary, and Benefits: Full-time; highly competitive salary including benefits such as 100%-employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for all staff and their children; employer-paid premiums for life insurance for all staff; 13.32 hours accrued vacation per month, 6.66 hours accrued sick leave per month; floating and all-staff holidays, and reimbursement of home office expenses.
