Newsday Media Group (NMG) is one of the nation’s most dynamic media organizations, serving Long Island and New York City through its portfolio of mobile and digital products, print publications and live events. With 19 Pulitzer Prizes and other esteemed awards for outstanding journalism, our mission and vision is to engage consumers and businesses by connecting them to the communities in which they live, work and play.

We are building a digital platform that will be the center of Long Island’s civic life. We believe that effort will be bolstered by high-quality, non-partisan research and analysis that is understandable and useful to a wide audience. To execute that vision, we are hiring a journalist to find data that will engage Long Islanders. The data journalist will partner with outside experts to shape our original research, write about trends and changes in existing civic data and build tools that make data relatable to individuals’ lives.

Why you want this job: You believe that informed debate can improve the world. You want to join a project managed by Newsday’s Opinion section to map out a better future for Long Island. You believe that audiences are smarter — and engagement deeper — when they can explore data and draw their own conclusions.

On a typical day, you might:

•Identify ways that good data can shape the daily conversation.

•Create charts, maps and analysis based on data aggregated from existing sources.

•Build interactive tools and graphics to allow readers to track indicators about Long Island over time.

•Collaborate with a research manager and outside experts to identify and refine questions for original research and surveys.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree, be knowledgeable about exploring raw data, seeking guidance from outside experts and identifying the best tools to explain and present information to the public. This position demands a creative thinker who can leave their mark on a new project.

Newsday Media Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer and maintains a drug-free and smoke-free workplace.
