Coordinator, Stateline (Editorial Assistant)

The Research and Science Portfolio at The Pew Charitable Trusts
The research and science portfolio includes programmatic, functional, and outreach elements. It spans all of Pew's programmatic work with a focus on advancing quality research and science and deploying research expertise to further the goals of ongoing projects. The portfolio reviews the design of new research projects across the institution to ensure they are high quality, unbiased, and methodologically sound. The programmatic elements of the portfolio include specific products related to biomedical science, environmental science, Philadelphia public policy research, and fiscal federalism. In addition, research and science has a role in communicating timely, accurate information on state issues to the general public as the Pew daily news publication, Stateline, is part of our organization. The portfolio also includes an operational aspect working to ensure effective management systems across the program department and coordinating with key partners across the institution. Project Overview
Launched in 1998, Stateline is a web-based source of news and analysis that helps policy makers, media, influential stakeholders, and the public track developments in state capitals nationwide. It produces 20 or more originally reported articles on key state policy issues every month, while also offering a daily news roundup from dozens of state and local media outlets that identifies emerging issues and trends in the 50 states. Stateline also produces special reports, such as its annual State of the States series, and intensive, ongoing coverage of major events—e.g., how states are responding to ongoing fiscal pressures. Stateline's readership includes millions of readers, including state officials, business leaders, journalists, students of state government and ordinary citizens. The content appears at www.stateline.org and is distributed to the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, PBS NewsHour, Philadelphia Inquirer, USA Today, Washington Post, and others. The coordinator will serve as an editorial assistant to Stateline and support the three editors and ten reporters by assisting with graphics creation, photo location and permissions, research for stories, data verification, and production of a daily newsletter. The coordinator may contribute to the reporting and writing of stories. This position also entails some administrative duties such as coordinating travel and tracking freelancer contracts. The coordinator will work in Pew's Washington, D.C., office and will report to the project director, executive editor, Stateline.
- Help staff writers with reporting and research for stories.
- Work with reporters to understand their research and data in order to help develop the story that the graphics are intended to communicate. Suggest options for data display.
- Organize, manipulate, and code data in Excel, Tableau, and Pew's custom mapping tool to produce the desired visualizations.
- Locate photographs for use in Stateline stories and verify permissions.
- Serve as backup and assistant to Stateline's copy editor; assist with fact-checking as assigned.
- Assemble Stateline's daily newsletter.
- Maintain Stateline's story database.
- Maintain Stateline's travel tracker, which records approved expense estimates and actual travel expenses. Occasionally provide backup to the administrative assistant in facilitating expense reimbursement, travel arrangements, and other tasks.
- Assist as requested with preparation of budget reports and freelancer contract tracking and renewals.
- Keep track of federal, state and local policy developments and suggest ideas for Stateline coverage.
- May co-author or contribute occasional stories to Stateline.
- A minimum of one year of relevant experience in areas such as journalism, data collection and analysis, or graphics.
- Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products, especially Excel and Word (including track changes). Knowledge of Tableau and other graphics software is a plus.
- Outstanding organizational and time management skills; ability to handle several projects at different stages simultaneously and a strong capacity to track details.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (including proofreading).
- Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
