Senior Fellows Shape and Execute Critical Work in a Critical Time

MoveOn is a grassroots progressive force of millions of members with a central role to play in the Trump era. In our 20-year history, we have mobilized together to help build a country where everyone can thrive -- one marked by justice, sustainability, economic security, peace, and mutual care.  We focus our resources on work that can have impact, and operate with a commitment to excellence, nimbleness, and equity.

As a pillar of the current Resistance movement, we are mobilizing opposition to Trump and the GOP’s toxic agenda.  We are determined to make the 2018 elections a turning point and wave election, helping Democrats win the House to create a roadblock to Trump & Republicans’ ability to advance their toxic agenda, while electing new progressive champions who can help lead our country to a better future.  Our goal is to build power through the elections that can then be put to work after Election Day.

MoveOn is interested in bringing in senior-level talent in this crucial election year to join our communications team. MoveOn’s Senior Political Communications Fellow will also be closely integrated with the work of our elections and DC teams. This is a highly relational role, requiring collaboration with MoveOn staff as well as representation of MoveOn to the broader world. Senior Fellows communicate regularly with MoveOn’s Executive Directors. This position will report to MoveOn's Chief Communications Officer.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement political communications strategies in service of MoveOn’s millions of members—strategies that enhance MoveOn’s impact on elections, build affinity with members and key stakeholders, and set progressives up to exercise influence after the election.

    Manage 1-3 projects at a time, mutually determined with the Chief Communications Officer, which could include a range of communications strategies and tactics including thought leadership, brand building, infrastructure development, event management, content creation, cultural organizing, and communications innovation.

    Shape thinking of key audiences that set political conventional wisdom, including movement, media, and DC elites.

    Drive messaging and narratives telling the story of MoveOn members’ and the Resistance Movement’s work.

    Utilize existing relationships and develop new relationships as needed to inform, coordinate, and execute MoveOn strategies and campaigns.

    Participate in MoveOn team regular calls, email and slack discussions, team meetings, and in-person retreats.

    Speak on behalf of MoveOn in public settings.

    Use knowledge, experience, and skills to sharpen and enhance MoveOn’s work.


Skills and Experience

  • Substantial leadership experience garnered by routinely developing and managing winning communications strategies for elections, legislative advocacy, social justice initiatives, movement power building, policy progress, and/or other non-profit work. Examples of this leadership include, but are not limited to: impactful frontline community or national organizing, significant Capitol Hill experience, and/or other senior level communications work.

    Superb communicator, effective at developing persuasive and memorable messaging and understanding how it may land differently on different audiences, and then conveying that messaging through writing, social media, conversation, presentations, art, and/or other content and forms of communication.

    Well respected throughout progressive, social justice, and activist movements, the advocacy community, on the Hill, with media contacts, and/or in the Democratic Party.  Maintains a healthy network of relationships that can be leveraged to strategize, coordinate, and implement initiatives.

    Highly skilled at interpersonal relations -- worked well with previous colleagues and demonstrated an ability to provide and accept constructive feedback in meaningful, productive ways.


Location: Position may be based anywhere in the continental United States.

Duration: 7 months.

Deadline: Candidates will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with a goal of starting full-time by May 2018

Classification, Salary, and Benefits: Full-time, competitive salary including benefits such as 100%-employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for all staff and their children; employer-paid premiums for life insurance for all staff; four weeks accrued paid vacation time per year; 12 weeks of paid maternity or paternity leave, 10 days accrued paid sick time; and reimbursement of office expenses.
